Kangin gripped the thin piece of silk that was currently tightening itself around his neck and pulled forcefully. He hated this stupid tuxedo and the stupid shoes and the stupid tie. He wanted to be in jeans, sitting on his couch with a beer, brooding over how badly his life sucked.

But nooooo…Kim Heechul wasn’t going to let him do that. No, Kim Heechul needed his head of security to attend this wedding and torturous reception to ‘watch out for him’. Kangin scoffed as he watched Heechul laughing at something the monkey boy…what was his name? Hyukjae….said something funny and Heechul was snort-laughing in that weird way of his. Kangin rolled his eyes and looked away.

For the millionth time that evening, his eyes fell on Dr. Park. He was standing in a corner, talking idly with someone and holding a glass of wine. He looked perfect. Perfect and handsome and completely out of Kangin’s league.

He felt like he was a kid again, oogling that beautiful, completely overpriced bicycle in the store. He’d wanted it so badly, he could still remember standing there, practically drooling with want. But his parents had dragged him away, reminding him they didn’t have the money for a bike like that.

That was how he felt now. He wanted something he could never have.

He sighed and looked away. It only depressed him to watch the psychiatrist, even though he was fascinating to watch. When he smiled, there were dimples on his face that appeared that made him look young and happy. Kangin smiled any time Dr. Park smiled, and that was dangerous.

He decided to make another round of the room to make sure there were no new faces that might pose a threat. Not that Heechul or any of his friends were in danger anymore. Heechul’s Father had been in jail a while now. His job as Head of Security was more of an honorary one, as he was the one who put Kim Jongdae in jail in the first place. He’d lost his job over it, but little by little, he was gaining his credibility and honor back. He had Heechul to thank for that, although sometimes he wondered if Heechul didn’t enjoy needling the hell out of him.

This thought was confirmed as he reached the group of people that Heechul was at the center of. He frowned as he looked up to see Heechul waving at him frantically. Immediately he jumped into action, years of training kicking in lightning fast.

“What? What is it?” He reached for the gun that was never going to rest at his hip ever again. Frustrated, he pulled his hand away.

But instead of answering him, Heechul came over and gripped Kangin’s arm and turned him around, pointing to the door. Kangin frowned and was about to ask Heechul what he was supposed to be looking at when he saw it.

Dr. Park was shaking Shindong’s hand with a smile. He was standing close to the door, and Kangin knew suddenly that the psychiatrist was about to leave. He froze, caught between want and fear.

“What are you waiting for, idiot?” Heechul hissed. “Go get him before he leaves!”

“And do what, exactly?” Kangin pulled out of Heechul’s grip and set his jaw stubbornly.

Heechul glared at him as if he was feeble-minded. “You’ve been staring at him like a lost puppy all night. Go ask him out!”

Kangin opened his mouth to object at being compared with a lost puppy but Dr. Park was already heading for the door. Heechul placed his hands on Kangin’s back and literally pushed him. He stumbled forward a foot or two and turned around to give Heechul a dirty look, but Heechul was looking immensely pleased with himself.

Grumbling, Kangin turned around and forced his feet towards the door. Unconsciously he pulled his hand through his hair and straightened his tie. He would have given anything for a mirror to make sure he looked okay, but then again, he knew he’d look in it and chicken out.

Dr. Park had reached the door of the reception hall and was already walking out. Kangin froze, suddenly locked there by fear of rejection. From behind him somewhere he heard someone shout in victory. He suddenly felt like his heart was pounding out of his chest.

I can’t do this. Look at him, he’s perfect and I’m just a stupid, dirty cop.

Oddly, he heard his Mother’s voice over the racket going on in his brain.

“You did the right thing, Youngwoon. I’m proud of you.”

Kangin swallowed hard. What was the worst that could happen? The guy could laugh at him and wound his pride. In truth, he had nothing to lose. His pride and honor had already been crushed once. He was about as low as he could get.

He took a deep breath and began to walk towards the door again. There was another exclamation and cheering from behind him and he made a mental note to strangle Kim Heechul when this was over.

Dr. Park had already left the reception hall and was walking towards the hotel lobby. He didn’t look rushed, and for that Kangin was grateful. He walked faster, catching up to him easily.

“Dr. Park?” He called out, amazed that his voice didn’t crack like he was a prepubescent boy again.

Dr. Park paused and turned, and Kangin was nearly knocked over with the force of that beautiful, angelic smile. The dimples that Kangin had been falling in love with all night long appeared, and something in his chest squeezed tightly in response.

“Yes?”

“I uh…” Kangin began nervously. “I was uh…” He flailed, wondering where all his training at keeping his calm in tense situations had gone. “I was wondering if you…if you weren’t busy if maybe we could ah….well… do you want to get some coffee?” he blurted out.

The smile on Dr. Park’s face slid away, leaving him staring at Kangin in shock.

“I’m sorry, what?” He blinked, looking confused.

He had no idea where it came from, but he knew this was it. He was standing in front of that inquisition board again, forced to undergo every microscopic detail of his failings as a police officer. They had picked apart his miserable excuse for a life and there had been nothing he could do about it. The numbness crept in, allowing him to breathe and let go of all the fear.

“I was wondering if maybe you wanted to get a cup of coffee with me?” He said, and somewhere in the back of his head he marveled at how normal it sounded.

“Oh!” Dr. Park placed his hand on his chest, and another blinding smile appeared. He laughed nervously. “I thought you were saying I’d forgotten my coffee or something.”

Kangin stood there, dumbfounded. He had no idea what to do. Firstly, he hadn’t been downright rejected, yet the question still hadn’t been answered.

“No, I just…….. I hate these things and Heechul…well, he’s fine, I’m just there for show anyway. I’m craving coffee. Do you want to get some with me?”

“Sure.” Dr. Park smiled again, and Kangin blinked, wondering if he’d finally lost the remaining bits of his sanity. Had that been a yes? “There’s a coffee shop down the street, I think. I had breakfast there this morning.” Dr. Park said brightly. “They make really good biscotti.”

Kangin gaped at him, amazed. Not only had he not been rejected, but this guy liked to talk, which meant there wouldn’t be any uncomfortable, awkward silences.

“I love biscotti.” He said, even though he didn’t have the faintest idea what biscotti was. It didn’t matter, he’d eat a thousand of them just to make Dr. Park smile again.

“Good.” Dr. Park walked to the front desk and handed the clerk a ticket. Kangin fumbled in his pocket to retrieve his own ticket. She smiled at them and disappeared, and a few moments later she came back, holding both coats.

Kangin slipped into his own woolen pea coat, woefully aware of how silly it looked over a tuxedo. Dr. Park’s coat was a long, expensive looking trenchcoat that made Kangin’s throat dry as he pulled it on. The man had to work out….no one moved like that who didn’t spend time in the gym. He reigned in his thoughts before he began to drool.

They walked out of the hotel and into the cold winter air. Kangin watched Dr. Park pull a pair of leather gloves out of his pocket and pull them on. He reached into his pockets and found the old knit gloves that had seen better days and slipped them on his hands. They might be old, but they were still warm.

“It was a beautiful wedding.” Dr. Park said, and the smile on his face was a little wistful.

“Yes, it was.” Kangin agreed.

“Shindong is a lucky man. She’s beautiful, and she can put up with his idiosyncrasies.” Dr. Park laughed a little. Kangin exhaled, feeling his heart drop heavily into his toes.

He wants someone like that. A beautiful woman.

Kangin took a long breath and kept walking alongside him. He should have known better than to hope. It was going to be coffee and nothing more. Disappointment crushed him, but he kept walking.

“How do you know Shindong?” Dr. Park asked, and Kangin looked at him. His eyes were a beautiful brown color. He looked interested, as if the question wasn’t just meaningless chatter.

“Through Heechul.” Kangin answered. “I helped them with their case against his father.”

“Oh, Heehcul.” Dr. Park chuckled. “He’s definitely….interesting.”

“He’s crazy.” Kangin snorted.

“Actually, he’s not. I evaluated him, I should know.” Dr. Park grinned, and Kangin swore he could see a little twinkle of mischief in those beautiful eyes.

“Do me a favor, Doc. Don’t evaluate me during coffee or you might have to lock me up.”

And then the most unexpected thing happened. Dr. Park lifted his head and began to laugh.

It was the most unusual sound Kangin had ever heard in his life. It didn’t match the man in front of him at all. It was a high pitched, tittering giggle that sounded as if it should have come out of the mouth of a 13 year old girl and not a professional psychiatrist. Kangin stopped walking, gaping at the man next to him. It was quite possibly the most endearing, unexpected, adorable thing he’d done yet.

Dr. Park blushed a little and started walking again. “No, I’m not a shrink tonight.” He said, and Kangin got the impression that he was slightly embarrassed at his laughing outburst.

If possible, Kangin fell just a little bit more in love with him at that moment.

“Good.” Kangin smiled. “I’m not a security guard tonight either.”

“You know, I just realized something.” Dr. Park said as they reached the coffee shop. Out of instinct, Kangin reached out and pulled open the door. A rush of warm air washed over them and it felt heavenly. They walked inside and Kangin looked at him again.

“What’s that?” He asked, pulling off his own gloves.

“I don’t even know your name.” Dr. Park said shyly, looking at him. Kangin wanted to shiver, but not from the cold. This man was killing him slowly, and God but he was enjoying it.

“Kim Youngwoon.” He smiled, holding out his hand. “But everyone calls me Kangin.”

Dr. Park smiled, pulled off his gloves and shook Kangin’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Youngwoon. My name is Jungsu.”

“Jungsu.” Kangin said, rolling the name around on his tongue like it was chocolate. Jungsu inhaled a little and then that smile was back, this time along with the dimples there was a hint of a blush on his face. It melted away what was left of the nerves that had been plaguing Kangin since laying eyes on him several hours ago.

Maybe he doesn’t want a pretty girl. Maybe he wants someone real. Maybe he could want me.

“Do you know what you want?” Jungsu turned to look at the board above the counter, eyeing the menu. Kangin smiled at the perfect profile he made, pale skin and shadows playing around his face from the warm light in the restaurant.

“Yes.” Kangin said, hope filling him slowly, calmly, as if they had all the time in the world. “I know what I want.”

It’s you.
