Summary: You risk it all to tell the truth
You wonder why you’re doing this, why you ever let anyone convince you that this was a good idea. You wonder why you don’t just turn around and walk away, pretend like you didn’t leave the safety of your own room to go tell him something that has been stuck inside your throat since the day you met him.
You make my heart slam out of my chest and the air leave my lungs and my head to pound and my hands to sweat. You make me want to laugh and cry and scream and throw things and kiss you. You make me want to swear and shake you and beg you to see me for who I really am.
You stand in front of his door and hold your hand to the wood and pause, wondering if you are doing the right thing. You are taking a chance that could alter the course of your friendship, and maybe even the whole group. What if he says no? What if he rejects you? What if all these times when he touched you and was laughing and smiling, was just two guys being friends and not the hints that there could be more?
Your hand twitches and hits the door and then you pull it back like the door burned your fingers. Seconds later it swings open and he is standing there, the light from above illuminating him, making it look like he has a halo of light. He smiles and steps back, a clear indication that he wants you to step inside.
You do, and he closes the door behind you, asking you what’s up. You take a deep breath, swallow the fear and look him in the eye. You tell him you love him, and that you’ve loved him for a long time. That you know he may not feel the same way, but you think maybe he does. You tell him you want to be with him, but if he doesn’t want you that way, you’ll understand, and never speak of this again.
He looks at you in surprise, and then his eyes darken and change to something unreadable. Seconds tick by and you can feel it begin to build in the center of your chest as it spirals downwards. It claws at your insides, twisting and burning until the silence grows fur and teeth. You step back involuntarily, the lump in your throat nearly clogging your airway.
Miraculously, you manage to appear as if you have not just had your heart broken. You smile weakly and tell him you’re sorry. You turn, forcing your feet to move even though they feel numb and hollow. You want to run like hell back to your room and curl up into a ball of regret and hurt, but you walk, step by agonizing step away from him.
You are two feet from your door when your hand is caught, and then you are turning, coming back to face him with surprising force. He takes your face in his hands and tells you that he loves you too, and that you are stupid and didn’t give him a chance. And then he is kissing you, and all those demons inside your head are destroyed, replaced by sheer joy and disbelief.
And then everything that you feared is gone, every dream you had about how good your life could be comes true, and he loves you and you feel like you could fly. When he pulls away and says your name with a smile, you know you already are.
