Cho Kyuhyun looked out into the night, leaning on the wall of the balcony he was standing on. Below him the city twinkled and spread out for miles, the noise and commotion of New Years Eve making his head throb with the energy of so many people at once.

He sighed, unwilling to take the effort to block it all out. He was tired of it all, and even though it would only take one single inhalation and the concentration of his mind to wipe his mind of all the useless chatter, he just didn’t want to. He had no idea why he had bothered coming here tonight. It was just another party full of humans. Just another group of people that he would pick from to feed the hunger already gnawing at him. Humans that were, in essence, his food.

Bored out of his mind, he turned around to glance inside, his eyes roving over the crowd of people nearby. His face was set in a blank, indifferent expression as he read each one, absently and unconsciously choosing which one would be his meal tonight. The human was laughing happily at something, the blood pumping through his veins was laced with alcohol and cocaine. Kyuhyun grimaced. Cocaine always made him sick the next day.

He began to glance around for another target, slowly growing irritated with the mindless chatter. He hated parties, and yet here he was, at a party. Internally he groaned when he saw Sungmin enter the room. Even at this distance, his eyes found the other vampire. They had known each other far too long for him to hide from Sungmin, and sure enough it was only seconds before Sungmin’s keen eyesight found him across the room on the balcony.

Sungmin smirked and gave a nod of his head, and Kyuhyun nodded back, relieved that Sungmin had not immediately dashed over and pulled him into the crowd of unknowing humans to chat up people who in all likelihood might turn out to be his dinner later tonight.

In truth, the fact that Sungmin NOT run right over had set a small alarm off in Kyuhyun’s head, but he was grateful that he was being left alone.

He could hear greetings of “Happy New Year!” as he watched them all mingling. Kyuhyun had to stop and wonder which year they were about to celebrate the birth of. There had been so many new year celebrations in his 102 years of existence, he hadn’t been paying attention. He glanced over at a passing human and could see 2012 on a hat on the woman’s head. Kyuhyun yawned and wondered if Sungmin’s odd lack of excitement would hold if Kyuhyun tried to slip out unseen.

He was edging himself away from the railing when he felt a strange blast of warm air. There was a sudden drop in the chatter, and Kyuhyun frowned, immediately feeling the heartbeats of nearly forty human’s speed up. Tensing, he looked around as the chatter once more began to normalize. The heat had come from somewhere, and then Kyuhyun saw it.

Or, rather who, to be specific.

The man was tall. Even that was an understatement. He seemed to tower over everyone, and Kyuhyun could feel the warmth radiating from the man. He was smiling, so brightly that it was practically blinding. Kyuhyun stared from the shadows of the balcony as the man began laughing at something the hostess had just said. People were staring at the newcomer with the same sort of fascination that Kyuhyun was doing, but the tall man simply smiled and began moving around the room, greeting friends and picking up a glass of champagne from a passing tray.

“You see him too, huh?” Sungmin had practically materialized next to him, and Kyuhyun chastised himself for letting down his guard. He nodded, still watching the tall man as he moved gracefully around the room.

“Do you know him?” Kyuhyun asked, even now still feeling the warmth that kissed his skin from so far away. It sent tingles of warning along his spine, and he did not take his eyes off the man.

“No.” Sungmin said quietly, and Kyuhyun glanced at him, a little surprised to see Sungmin’s eyes were also trained on the newcomer, but they were full of apprehension.

“He’s a Helio Sylph. A sun creature.” Sungmin said, his voice lowered. Kyuhyun’s eyes snapped back to the man in stunned silence.

“I thought they--”

“Only came out in the daytime? Yeah, me too.” Sungmin said, looking nervous. “This one might be a halfbreed if he can walk around at night and still have full powers.”

“I can feel it from here, can you?” Kyuhyun murmured. Sungmin nodded, stepping back.

“It’s too much for me. I’m outta here. He could kill us with a touch.”

Kyuhyun nodded, watching Sungmin as he slipped away, sliding easily between the humans as he left. He was gone in less than a minute, but Kyuhyun stayed. The Helio Sylph made his way through the crowd, and the heat from his smile was alarming. Kyuhyun could not seem to stop staring at him.

He had been on this earth for one hundred and two years. He was tired of it…tired of the endless games, tired of the hunt, of the constant boredom of his life. But he was too proud to end it the traditional way….something vampires called ‘greeting the sun’. He watched as the tall creature began winding its way towards the balcony, closer and closer, as if being drawn there by Kyuhyun himself. He might be too proud to greet the sun, but biting and drinking this creature’s blood would kill him in the most enticing and delicious way possible.

“Yes. Come closer.” Kyuhyun murmured, feeling his fangs elongate and his skin turn cold as the hunger enveloped him in a familiar embrace. “I want to taste the sun.”

As if the sun creature had heard him, he turned and his eyes lighted on Kyuhyun. Instantly a blast of warmth hit him, and although it tingled, it did not burn. Yet. He watched, knowing his eyes were probably glowing now. Slowly the man began to move through the crowd, his long fingers wrapped delicately around a crystal goblet filled with champagne.

Kyuhyun shuddered at the heat but held his ground. He felt both mesmerized and trapped, despite the fact that his fangs were dripping with hunger. He was used to being the hunter, and somehow the energy had shifted away from him. For the first time, he felt as if he was the hunted.

The man smiled a slow, wicked smile as he stepped out onto the balcony. “Well well.” He murmured. “A night walker. You didn’t run when I appeared?” He asked, and his voice was like music straight from a spring day. Kyuhyun’s lip curled at the melodic sound, showing his fangs. Whether it was from instinct or desire he could not say.

“I don’t run.” Kyuhyun said, despite the heat that was now licking at his skin, causing ripples of delicious pain to roll over him.

The sun creature laughed, and it was so filled with light and beauty that the sound made Kyuhyun feel as if he had been lashed with a whip of pure fire. Every instinct was screaming at him to flee before the helio sylph turned him to a pile of ash, but he held his ground.

Slowly, one delicate eyebrow raised as the man took a sip of his champagne. Kyuhyun groaned as the man’s adams apple moved up and down as the champagne slid down his delicious looking throat. “Ah.” He said, lowering the glass again. “I see. You want to die, is that right?”

Kyuhyun hissed as the man’s hand lifted his glass once more, the rim resting on the edge of his lips. He did not answer, wondering now if he had made a mistake. He had never intended to give the sun creature the upper hand. He did not do well when the power was shifted away from him. Yes, he had wanted to sink his fangs in and die a glorious death, but he had not imagined the helio sylph to be quite so….amused by him.

The man stepped closer and Kyuhyun gasped, his instincts kicking in alongside a desire so strong that it stole his breath. He was panting with hunger and a sudden burning need, the combination making him disoriented. He had known there would be hunger, and he had known there would be pain, but the sexual desire was unexpected. It had been so long since he had allowed himself that pleasure it was making him lose control.

“I could kill you with a touch.” The man murmured, sounding curious. Kyuhyun swallowed, feeling his fangs puncture his lower lip. His own blood flowed over his tongue and it seemed to clear his mind enough for him to focus. He closed his eyes, fighting the desire and the heat, calling on his own supernatural strength.

“Not before I get what I want.” He said through clenched teeth.

“You want to bite me? Hm? Draw my blood into your mouth and feed you?” The man whispered again, and Kyuhyun moaned as the heat seemed to curl around him, sparking along his skin and arousing him just as easily as if the man had really touched him.

“Nnngh….” Kyuhyun gasped, feeling the way the warmth and the sun magic surrounded him and slid inside him, scorching fire through his body.

“I bet you thought I didn’t know how to make love to someone without killing them with my touch, didn’t you, beautiful little night creature?” the man’s voice slid inside his mind, and Kyuhyun lost his grip on the railing behind him, unable to hold himself upright as the sensations rolled over him. He could feel what was not actual skin on skin, but a soft heat that coiled around his cock and began to stroke lazily. Coupled with the oh-so-real feeling of the heat flowing in and out of his body like a lover thrusting inside him, it was nearly too much to take.

“I don’t know about you, but I have no intention of killing you, or giving you my blood.” The man said, drinking once more from his champagne glass. “Without my consent, that is.” He smiled wickedly.

Kyuhyun looked up dazedly at the man who was controlling him like a puppet, burning him and pulling him towards the edge of insanity. He’d had sex before, but this was nothing like that. This was pure sin burning marks onto his body, branding him and making him shake with the force of his impending orgasm. He felt like he was dying and being reborn all at once, and it was a feeling too intense to give words to.

He knew he was coming, and he could see through the hunger, the pain and the sheer need that whatever was happening to him was also affecting the helio sylph. He was glowing now, and every breath he took in made him shudder and shake with sensual delight. Kyuhyun moaned as his body surrendered and he came, crying out a strangled gasp as the feeling let go, whiplashing backwards and leaving him breathless.

He sank to his knees, watching as the man moaned and licked his lips, drinking in the energy that Kyuhyun had released. He wanted to stand, to sate the hunger clawing at his insides, but he could not move. He watched as the sun creature knelt down next to him, the heat searing into his bones, pushing him towards imminent death by fire.

“Do you still want to die, beautiful one?” The man asked. Kyuhyun felt his fangs dripping, heard the crowd behind them swell with shouting as the seconds counted down to a new year. Suddenly the instinct to live clawed at him, screaming out that he didn’t want to die.

“No.” Kyuhyun hissed through the pain.

“Good. Then I won’t kill you.” The man said, and then he was leaning forward, moving his throat within inches of Kyuhyun’s fangs, an offering that was too tempting to pass up. Kyuhyun lurched forward, gripping onto him, pulling him down and sinking his fangs into that perfect, smooth skin.

Instantly the pain was gone, replaced by pure, white gold flowing in his mouth. It was a thousand delicious things, it was music and dance and joy and beauty, it was truth and ecstasy all at once. Liquid sun flowed from the helio sylph’s neck into his mouth, and although it burned and seared him, it did not kill him.

He closed his eyes and fell back as the blood in his veins was set afire by the sun, burning to ash the cells that carried the vampiric mutation. In the distance midnight arrived, carrying with it shouts and calls of good luck and love. Kyuhyun cried out as the supernatural power he had lived with for so long burned brightly like a spark and then was extinguished, leaving him gasping for breath on the floor of the balcony.

Seconds passed in silence, and then he began to hear the thrum of a drumbeat so loud that it echoed in his mind like thunder.

I can feel my heart beating.

Kyuhyun was stunned. There was a soft touch on his forehead, and his eyes flew open. The sun creature was kneeling above him, smiling gently.

“Welcome back to the world, Kyuhyun.” He said, his voice still ringing with music. He pulled Kyuhyun to his feet and wrapped his arms around his waist. “Happy 2012.”

“What-- How did you know my name?” Kyuhyun stammered, shocked at the transformation.

“I have my own talents.” He smiled a little mischievously. “My name is Zhou Mi.” The man said, curling his warm hand into Kyuhyun’s. “I’m thirsty. Come on, let’s get a drink. And then we can celebrate a new life and a new year alone, hm?”

Kyuhyun did not know what had happened, or whether this was all a dream, but as he followed Zhou Mi back inside, he realized that for the first time in a hundred and two years, he was happy to be alive.
