HanGeng pulled his baseball cap lower and slipped through the door of the elevator. The moment the doors closed, he exhaled in relief and slumped back against the wall, grateful that he had not been spotted. He closed his eyes, remembering the series of events that had led to him being here.

It had started with an email.

From: Yesung
To: HanGeng
Subject: Heechul

HanGeng, I know you’re busy, but we have to do something. It’s been almost four months since Leeteuk-hyung went into the army, now everyone is in China and Heechul-hyung has gotten really sad. He did okay for the first month or so, but then he started getting distant and now he stays in his room a lot. I hate seeing him like this. And you know...when Heechul mopes, it's never quiet. Can you come for a day or two, just to cheer him up?

Yesung

~~~
HanGeng looked over at Yesung who was standing beside him in the elevator. He looked tired but relieved. It was nice to see him again.
“I’m glad you emailed me.” HanGeng said, and Yesung smiled weakly.
“We’ve learned the warning signs. We let it go longer than we should have. It was okay until the rest of them went to China but now….” He trailed off, then sighed. “I’m really glad you could come. He’s been listening to Nell pretty much non stop for days.”
HanGeng made a face. “Yikes.”
Yesung nodded as the elevator came to a stop on the 12th floor. The doors opened and they peered out, making sure no one was in the hallway. Getting HanGeng in the door of a building he had been banned from had been very tricky business. But after living so for long here, they had all perfected the art of sneaking out….and more importantly…sneaking back IN.
HanGeng followed Yesung as they half walked, half ran down the hall to their suite. It was a little after midnight, so luckily the building was relatively quiet. The moment Yesung opened the door and they stepped inside, HanGeng felt like someone had yanked him back in time four years. It was all the same, but yet everything was different. He and Heechul had seen each other since his hasty departure and the subsequent fall-out, but it had been hard. Schedules and the army, tours and trips…seeing each other in person had been nearly impossible. Being here was unsettling but also good. Like he was coming home to a place he’d only lived in in a dream.
“Okay, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you in the morning. If anyone finds you here, blame it on me.”
“I’m not going to blame anything on you.” HanGeng hugged Yesung. “Thank you for this. I know it wasn’t easy.”
Yesung laughed a little. “It will make it all worth it to see Heechul smiling again.”
He turned and sprinted away, leaving HanGeng standing in the living room area of the dorm he had lived in for so long. He glanced at Heechul’s door and took a deep breath. He never knew how Heechul would react to anything, and it made for interesting situations. He could get hugged or punched….one never knew with Heechul.
He exhaled and walked forward, gripping the doorknob and turning it. He stepped quietly inside Heechul’s room, which was only lit dimly by a lamp on a table. Heechul was lying in bed, his back to the door. There were earbuds in his ears, the cord trailing along to disappear under the blanket thrown carelessly over his body.
HanGeng smiled to himself. The music was loud enough to hear clearly, and sure enough, the mournful sounds of a Nell song drifted to him. He debated, not knowing whether or not to touch Heechul or say his name first.
He decided to err on the side of caution and stay out of the range of Heechul’s flailing arms and fists, in case he thought HanGeng was an intruder. Experience had taught him that even though Heechul’s aim was terrible, he could do sufficient damage when he was caught off guard.
HanGeng set down his bag, shut the door softly behind him and leaned against it. “Heechul?” He said clearly, knowing his voice would be heard even over the music.
“I don’t want to go out, Yesung.” Heechul mumbled, his face pressed into his pillow.
“Heechul-ah, look at me.” HanGeng said patiently.
Heechul heaved a heavy sigh and rolled over, plucking one earbud out of his ear, intent on telling Yesung that he was in no mood when he realized who was standing there.
The effect was instantaneous. Heechul gasped and bolted upright, his foot kicking the nightstand. The lamp shook slightly, making the shadows in the room jump around. He stared in shock at HanGeng, his mouth hanging open as if he could not believe what he was seeing.
HanGeng smiled at him. “Hello, Heechul.”
Heechul continued to gape at him until his brain reconnected, and then he was spluttering, running forward and pulling HanGeng into a hug that conveyed all the words he could not seem to utter. HanGeng wrapped his arms around Heechul and held him tightly, knowing Heechul just needed to make sure this wasn’t a dream.
“I don’t understand. Why are you here? How did you get in here?” Heechul asked, his voice muffled against HanGeng’s neck.
“A little turtle told me you needed me. So I came.”
Heechul’s fingers dug into his shirt tightly. HanGeng nudged him gently and Heechul pulled away, sucking in air and plastering a smile on his face.
“God I’m glad you’re here, you know? This place is far too boring without you.” He said quickly, struggling to recover and pull his mask back in place. He self consciously yanked his fingers through his hair and tried to look like he hadn’t just spent the last month lying in bed in a fog of depression. “First you go, then Leeteuk goes, now all the rest of them are off having fun without me. And Yesung sucks at video games.”
HanGeng knew Heechul better than anyone on earth. He could see through that mask right into Heechul’s heart. He knew that the loss of his best friend to the army and the fact that the rest of them had gone to China meant that the loneliness had begun to pull him down further and further until he could barely get out of bed.
He stepped forward to close the distance between them and took Heechul’s face in his hands. Heechul sucked in a breath and stared at HanGeng, and HanGeng could feel him tremble slightly.
“Hey, don't do that. It’s me. You don’t have to act.” He said, and then he was kissing Heechul, showing him that he really was there, and that it really was okay. Heechul struggled, trying so hard to be strong, but HanGeng wasn't letting him. He held him tightly, his thumb pressing possessively into the small of Heechul's back. Heechul shuddered and lost the ability to hold it together. He melted and hung on to HanGeng for dear life…as if he was the only steady thing in the whole world.
HanGeng maneuvered them until they were sitting on Heechul’s bed. He laid down and pulled Heechul down with him and turned so they were facing each other. Heechul closed his eyes and slumped against him.
“So Yesung called you about me, huh.” He asked softly.
“Mmmhm.”
“Was it the Nell songs that gave it away?”
“That was one sign, yes.” HanGeng smiled, sliding his fingers over Heechul’s forehead. “I know you miss Teukie-hyung. And the rest of them.”
“I don’t miss Kyuhyun. Snarky brat.”
“Yes you do.” HanGeng continued to massage Heechul’s temples.
“Okay maybe.” He sighed, shifting his weight so they were more comfortable. HanGeng watched Heechul's eyes close slowly, long lashes sweeping over his pale skin. So much had changed, and yet so much was the same. They had laid like this a thousand times, and he had missed it more than he knew. “We’re going to have sex when I wake up.” Heechul moaned quietly in appreciation.
“Absolutely. Now go to sleep.”
“Don’t tell me what to do.” Heechul mumbled sleepily. HanGeng smiled and closed his eyes too. It took only a few minutes for Heechul’s breathing to even out. His chest rose and fell, a peace settling over him that HanGeng knew was only for him.
He knew his time here was limited, but he wanted to take advantage of every moment. He loved Heechul and even though time and distance kept them apart, that they would always find a way to make it work. He knew he would eventually have to return to China, but right here, right now, he was here, holding on to gravity.
