The first snow of the year just happened to fall as I walked a long unfamiliar road to work. Work. I had a job. The only other job I'd ever had was in Dev's shop and that was nothing like working behind a bar. This was going to be a disaster, I knew it already. The snow got heavier and started to form a thin blanket on the dry street meaning my feet made a soft crunching sound with every step I took. I loved winter, the snow, the way when you breathed the cold air you felt so fresh. Yeah, I loved winter but not today. I pulled my hands up into the sleeves of my coat, giving my hands a little warmth and kept my head down as I trugged through the snow. My bag was weighing down my back, killing me and making the situation worse. After what felt like hours, I finally turned into the street already late. I walked to the doors of the bar as quickly as I could not wanting to make an even worse impression. There was a buzz in the bar as I entered and a lot more people than there had been last night who all seemed excited. I looked around, walking to the bar, feeling warmer already. Glancing up at one of the plasmas on the wall I noticed that there was snooker on. Shaking my head, not understanding the fuss, I let my bag slide of my shoulder before spotting Sian making her way toward me, a smile on her lips. As usual, she looked beyond stunning. Her hair was tied back, a few locks falling in her face and she had on a tight little top that made her gorgeous eyes stand out. Eyes that made my stomach flutter and my heart beat like crazy. Eyes that were getting closer and closer to me...
"You're late." She tuts spinning around a table to my left, grabbing some glasses. "Not very impressive." Sian turns back to me smirking and nodding towards a door behind me. "You can leave your bag in there, babe."
"I'm sorry." I apologize, feeling like such an idiot.
"I'm only messing with you." She giggles walking towards the bar. "But, you're not gonna make a habit of it, eh?" One of her eyes snaps closed as she winks cheekily at me.
"No." I force out too long after she speaks for it too seem natural. She shakes her head and giggles again, walking away.
I stare after her for a few seconds flushing red when I realize my eyes were on her bum. I look away quickly, scanning the room to make sure no one had caught me. After that I rushed away through the door and lean back against it taking in a deep breath.
That guy, Adam, strolls down the stairs and stops raising an eyebrow when he sees me.
"Hi." I quickly say and he moves toward me. "I'm....I...Sian gave me a job here." I stutter and he smirks.
"Yeah?" His smirk turns into a proper smile. "Adam." He extends his hand towards me and I take it.
"Sophie." I nod shaking his hand.
"You're working here, then?" He asks letting my hand go after holding it for an inappropriate length of time and folding his arms across his chest.
"Yeah." I reply simple not knowing what else to say. I don't want to make an idiot of myself, or even worse piss him off.
"You look young, sure you're old enough?" He laughs playfully.
"Yeah," I laugh back. "19...but...you know, Sian knows."
"Okay, I was wondering for me actually." He grins and then sort of bows his head to me, winking before slipping out the door.
I stand in shock staring at the spot he stood in, eyes wide. Did....Did he really just say that? What a complete and utter arsehole. I turned to the left quickly and then back to the right, shuffling my feet, not quite sure what to do or where to go. I felt so awkward. If he said this to every girl...why the hell was she with him? I can't tell her can I? That'd be me out of a job if I did....
"Soph?" Sian's soft voice calls from the other side of the door. It opens before I have the chance to say anything. "You okay?"" She asks concerned.
I just smile, nod and rush past her out the door, avoiding Adam who stands grinning by the bar. I turn back to Sian, after pushing past her, not knowing what to do.
"C'mon then, you. Let me show you how to do your job." She giggles pulling me by the arm behind the bar.
We spend the next half hour or so talking about what pump is for what, what bottles are which drinks, which glasses I need to use, where I put empty glasses, how to work the till. I kind of listen but I'm constantly being distracted by the way her hair swishes in her pony tail as she turns, by the way her hands grip onto the glasses, by the way her fingers dance across the buttons on the till and by the way her lips break into a smile every time she sees I'm not concentrating. She asks me questions to make sure I've listened and surprisingly I don't mess up any of the answers.
"Right, come through the back and I'll show you where the barrels are for changing." She smiles walking through the doors and I follow. We end up in a cellar-type room and it's so freezing.
"Adam normally does this but just incase he's not here when they need changing..." Sian starts walking over to one of the large metal barrels.
"He seems nice." I lie my mouth dry. I didn't even think about saying it, the words just came from my mouth. I could really have slapped myself then...she'd think I was a nutter if I had.
"Really?" She scoffs shifting a box over to the side with her feet.
"Mmm..." I mumble wanting her to just forget I said anything.
"Everyone else thinks he's an arsehole." She laughs laying her hands down on top of the barrel looking at me. Waiting for me to say something.
"Erm...you obviously don't though...." I splurt out then grimace at my words. She hides a smile.
"Why do you think that?" She asks frowning tapping her fingers against the surface beneath her.
"Well...I dunno, you wouldn't be with him if you did, would ya?" I can't stop the words before they're out. I grit my teeth when she frowns again.
"With...with him?" She's biting back a laugh, her teeth sinking into her bottom lip distracting me again.
"Well you know..."
"Babe!" She burst out laughing. "That's disgusting, he's me brother!"
"Oh God, I'm sorry." I nearly shout more embarrassed than I've ever been. I'm a complete idiot. I can't ignore the wave of relief tht washes over me though. Thank God he isn't her boyfriend...I didn't even know if I would have ended up telling her about him flirting with me earlier.
"I just...I was just...because he was kinda....flirting with me earlier on and I though...I didn't know if..." I tell her not taking a breath. The smile fades from her lips when she hears what I say.
"Flirting with you?" She questions, a frown reappearing on her lips.
"Yeah a bit and I though..." I try to explain.
"Please don't tell me you like him babe." Sian moans. "He's exactly what every one thinks he is. No good, at least not as a boyfriend."
"No...I don't...I don't...No." My voice gets quieter with each word. Why am I acting like this? I can't even bring a sentence together when I'm talking to her. And now she thinks I fancy her brother.
"Oh no, you do, don't ya?" Sian sighs shaking her head. She's messing about with it a bit but she looks genuinely...I dunno, angry about it.
"I don't!" I insist.
"Oh, aye? What's wrong with him then?" She smirks folding her arms across her chest.
"Don't do that." I warn playfully, copying her movement. "Don't make it sound like..."
I stop when she cuts me off. We're standing here chatting away as if we've been best friend for years...I've only known her, or actually been in her company for a few hours.
"Go on, tell me what's wrong with him. What so unattractive about my brother?" She teases.
"Okay, well one, he's a lad..." I start a list I'd quickly gathered in my head but I don't get beyond the first point because the way she looks at me changes completely.
And we just stand staring awkwardly at each other. We stand silent for a long time before Sian clears her throat.
"Oh, so...you're like..." She trails off.
"Yeah." I answer quietly after a few silent seconds. I glance around nervously. She hasn't taken this too well. Bloody hell, Sophie. What was I thinking saying that?
"No, don't...It's not...I mean, I don't have a problem with that...if that's what I made you think there...sorry, I..." She mumbles and then points toward the door. "I need to go get Adam to show you this...I can't...you know..lift it..."
And then she rushes past me, out the door, leaving it to thump shut behind her, leaving the room a lot colder.
Nice one, Sophie.
