Walking back on a particularly chilly night, Yosuke and Souji were chatting idly when suddenly Souji stopped walking all together. It took Yosuke a good few seconds to realize he was talking to thin air and he stopped too, turning slightly. Souji's eyes were fixated on something ahead but before Yosuke could follow his gaze his partner was hurrying past him.

"Huh? Dude, what--"

Yosuke's words died on his tongue when Souji knelt beside what appeared to be a dead animal. A very... familiar dead animal? Alarmed, Yosuke moved quickly forward and then stopped short.

"Hey, isn't that...?"

Souji was already gathering the unmoving fox into his arms, tucking the creature carefully against his chest.

"Whoa, hey! Hey! What are you--"

"I think a car must've done it," Souji muttered worriedly. "Still breathing, though... Nothing looks broken but there's blood..."

Yosuke waved his hands at him frantically. "What the hell are you doing, partner? ... Hey!"

He scowled, not really appreciating being completely ignored, and darted after Souji if only because he didn't know what else to do. They'd been walking towards Yosuke's house but now Souji was headed in the opposite direction toward his home.

"Souji, what--oh dude, it's bleeding all over you--What is going on?!" One moment they had been walking home peacefully and the next Souji was carting a semi-dead animal in his arms.

Souji stopped short and Yosuke nearly collided with him. He skidded and hoped sideways to avoid it. He gave Souji a look and, of course, Souji returned it with a neutral stare.

"Yosuke, I know this might sound odd to you but I think of this fox as much a part of our team as anyone else. She might seem like just an animal but she's done a lot."

The words were meaningful but unfortunately they were lost on Yosuke because the only thing he zeroed in on was, "... It's a girl?"

Souji sighed and continued on, stepping at a very quick pace but not running for fear the jolting might hurt the animal in his arms. Said animal gave a weak whimper, recognizing Souji, but barely moved. It spurred him onward even faster, Yosuke trailing after him. He had mercifully fallen silent. As much as Souji enjoyed his friend's company sometimes he appreciated when he stopped asking so many questions. Together with fox in tow they made their way to the Dojima house and, of course, the silence from Yosuke did not last.

"Wait, are you really taking it to your house? Dojima-san is going to flip."

"He's not home."

"Okay, well Nanako might."

Souji didn't reply as they reached the door. Yosuke maneuvered around him and tugged it open for him. As Souji entered he threw a glance at Yosuke, "I could really use your help."

"Yeah, yeah..." Yosuke grumbled, already stepping inside and hastily tugging off his shoes.

As the door snapped shut soft footsteps padded toward them. "Big Bro, welcome--ah?!"

Nanako froze before them, eyes wide with a mixture of concern, fear and innocent curiosity.

"Nanako, sorry.... could you find some towels and a first aid kit?"

Nanako's attention was drawn to the fox in his arms. She blinked and nodded, darting off. Souji imagined she was still a bit stunned. He made his way to the bathroom, bumping the door open with his hip. Nanako appeared moments later and together she and Yosuke spread the towels out across the floor. Souji laid the fox down carefully and it whined at him softly. One eye was open and it gave him a look that seemed to mix between happy, thankful and scared. Upon laying the animal out and and underneath the bright bathroom lights Souji saw the injury. It looked like bite marks of some kind. The wound had pierced the fox's side and was the cause of all the blood. So it hadn't been a car after all.

Souji knelt beside her, Yosuke beisde him. Nanako fretted in the doorway as she watched. She looked like she wanted to run away and help at the same time.

"It's all right, Nanako," Souji told her gently. "You can go back to watching TV."

"Um... is it going to be okay?" Nanako asked, eyeing all the blood that was beginning to seep into the towels. Yosuke placed a clean towel over the injury as Souji opened the first aid kit.

"Yeah. Don't worry," Souji reassured her.

Nanako nodded, hesitated, but then finally relented and padded softly down the hall.

Somehow Souji managed to patch up the injury. He'd done similar for people before but never animals. Still, it couldn't be that much different. A wound was a wound. Clean it, disinfect it, bandage it and then keep changing the wrappings. It took some time but he managed and worked in silence, the only sound the rustling of clothing and material as he worked. Yosuke hovered around somewhat anxiously, not entirely sure what to do but not wanting to just leave in a time of crisis. Only when Souji finally flopped back against the bathroom wall did Yosuke stop looking so nervous. Somewhat.

The fox's breathing was shallow but noticeable. A good sign, Souji decided. He'd just have to keep changing the bandages and everything should be okay. He closed his eyes a moment. There was a pause before he turned his head, opening them again to find Yosuke staring at him uneasily. He'd forgotten his friend was even here and felt bad for that.

"Sorry. It's all right now," He told Yosuke gently. "Thanks for your help."

"Uh."

"Hm?"

Yosuke grimaced. "If, uh... everything is all set here could you... change your clothes or something?"

Souji blinked. He glanced down at himself, noting the smears of blood across his jacket and shirt. There was more than he thought. He hadn't even noticed. He rose heavily to his feet and looked apologetic.

"Sorry. I didn't know you were that squeamish, Yosuke."

Now Yosuke looked even more uncomfortable and waved his hand. "I'm not."

At Souji's confused look he grew flustered as well. "It's just... on you. Like you're injured or something. Just... get rid of it, dude."

Souji paused and a look of subtle but noticeable surprise came across his face. Then his gaze softened and he smiled. "I'm sorry. I'll change. Could you go check on Nanako for me?"

Yosuke nodded and Souji slipped out of the bathroom and into the hall, heading right toward his room. He couldn't wait to explain this one to Dojima.
