The hit counter is unreliable as a measure of unique readers, because a single computer with open tabs can run those numbers up... Having said that, I don't think people comment on archive fic nearly as much as on people's lj/dw pages, unfortunately!
I love AO3 - posting/editing are super-easy, although the tag cloud is a little intimidating.
Even though I'm well aware that the counters aren't really accurate, I still like to see that I've gotten hits. Does this make me a 'hit slut' as compared to a 'comment whore'?
;)
I do love the posting/editing capabilities. The tag thingie, though, makes me feel a little lost. How many tags should I use? Is there such a thing as too many? I am an archive newbie.
I only have an AO3 account for Yuletide, and I'm not anticipating moving my fic over. I'm not interested in having them preserved forever.
Hits mean nothing to me, I think they're completely pointless. All it records is that someone clicked a link - I don't know if they read the fic, clicked by accident, hated, loved, I know NOTHING. Pointless pointless pointless.
The only opinion I have on comments is that if someone leaves a comment on a story, the author should acknowledge it.
Perhaps if I'd written more than, what, ten stories in 14 years of fandom participation, I'd have a different opinion on the above. I guess I'm not really qualified to answer?
I see how the hit count can be pointless/annoying/hurtful/upsetting. I click on stuff and never get to read it plenty of times. Up goes the hit count on someone's fic and if there's no comment then perhaps I've given them stress... such as the whole "OMG, DO I SUCK? SAY SOMETHING!" reaction. This gives me sadface.
I have an AO3 account, but I have yet to get my fic put up over there. I do intend to, eventually, I just haven't had time yet. Also, I keep forgetting about it.
I joined the site, but haven't gotten around to uploading any fic there...I need to re-write a bunch of it first, as my last fic was written when I was say...22 :p
I had to force myself not to make changes to the fic I was uploading over there. A great deal of it was written back about 7-8 years ago and I was triggering an embarrassment squick when I caught some of what I'd written.
I did make a couple changes, actually. Nothing major, but added a couple lines of clarification on the grounds that if I can't remember what I'm talking about, the odds of anyone else doing so are slight. Usually it was stuff written right after an episode, making some glancing allusion that I think needs to be a little less glancing 5 years after the fact.
I'm also gathering some of my less successful stuff and propose to post it all as a story called "Everything Else" which is heavily disclaimered.
I, too, love all comments equally. Hurray for leaving a comment!
I understand preferring to comment on LJ/DW - it's more personal and generally speaking I know the person in some way through my fandom circle.
Copy of fic in email is made of win. I like this option a lot. I wonder if there is a script simple enough to put on personal archives that would do the same... *hmm*
I don't know if I would ever stop posting to my own site, but I will definitely be posting to AO3 when I post to LJ, redundant as it may be.
