some love for the ladies...

Sort of prompted by this secret on fandomsecrets . As a slasher, I tend to spend a lot of time squeeing over the boys - but this post is all about the ladies.

Some of the female characters I've adored over the years (and I do mean years - Uhura might have been my first crush). In some cases I might have problems with the storylines they were given or the way ( Read more... )

Oh Scully. When I was 14 and conflicted, my highest aspiration was to wear knit jumpers like the ones she wore. Consequently, I do not like looking at photos of my young self. But I still like Scully. Save for the fact that she never learned anything from episode to episode, and despite the twenty billion times that Mulder's cracktastic explanation for the monster of the week was right, she always held her to her 'well, OBVIOUSLY it cannot be aliens, Mulder, don't be ridiculous!' but this something to take up with the screen writers, not with Gillian Anderson, I suspect.

Also, I submit the following awesome characters for your consideration:
Tsukino Usagi, from the live action version of Sailor Moon
Tenjou Utena from Shoujo Kakumei Utena (this is a show I think you would like, actually. It's dastardly difficult to get a hold of because the DVDs have been discontinued, but if you ever come across it as downloadable fansubs, omg go for it. And send me the link.)
Pretty much the entire female cast of Battlestar Galactica

Heh, I totally agree with you about Scully! She was definitely one of the characters I was thinking of when I said I didn't necessary like how they were used in the text! But I loved her so much back then - and I still do. Fortunately I was too young to wear shoulder-padded pant-suits (I think that's the right word), or I'd be cringing even more at old photos of me (they're bad enough!).

I've never seen the new BSG, but I've heard quite a lot of squeeing about it? And the opposite of squeeing about the finale. ;) Is it worth checking out?

Ah - I thought this rang a bell, but I'm more used to it being referred to as Revolutionary Girl Utena. I've never seen it, but I thought it sounded interesting. Hmm - I'll have to keep an eye out. I've only recently got into manga & anime and it's just like when I first started to explore 'older' music - total kid in a sweet shop time. ;D

Well, I did draw the line at the knit jumpers, but let me tell you, they did feature predominantly in my wardrobe. I was completely ( ... )

That's high recommendation! ;D I know what you mean, though - I have so many series that I love that I could tear to pieces on an objective level ( ... )

Oh, the poster could have been a troll - such a wide variety of female characters, and they couldn't even find one to just 'like'? - but the scary thing I've heard similiar statements from people - thankfully not on my flist - 'but all the female characters are boring!!!' and it hurts my head so much. I mean, even the fanboys on the forums seem to like Rukia, Temari, Integra and Hawkeye.

Ooh - and is that Morgana in your icon? I need to rewatch Merlin - I suspect she might be another for my list. ;)

Oh, you should! That's more what prompted this - not so much outrage at the secret, more 'I love so many awesome female characters - I should give them some public love'. And that probably came out a bit wrong... ;D

The West Wing: CJ Cregg

Just look at this face. :D

My mother still thinks I could be her. White House Press Secretary. Hahaha.

White House Press Secretary FTW! You know you want to.

I've never seen The West Wing, but she looks awesome. Kind of scary, in that picture...but awesome. ;D

And smart too. Perfect distilled awesome. And she's never used for fanservice, but still manages to be one of the hottest manga/anime women around. *shares love for Riza*

Lizzie is still one of the coolest fictional women around. All that intelligence and understated snark. *loves* And Morgana and Gwen are totally my reason for fancying Merlin fandom, for all Arthur and Merlin's cute. I've never had a femmeslash OTP before, but I suspect they could be the first!

Glad you enjoyed! :D As a slasher, I don't often squee about the girls, but I definitely felt the need after that post. And it's all giving me the urge to write some girl-centred gen!

I loved Gaia! I think I actually cried when Eirene died - but at the same time it was just so Gaia - and *coughs and looks at some of her other pics* murderousness has never really put me off. ;D She was totally Pullo's female counterpart, and god she was amazing.

Ooh, yes - please do. That'd be great! I did this because I spend so much time squeeing over the boys, I thought it was time for a squeeing over the girls post. ;D

Heh - I think you gave up on Death Note at about the same time as me! Misa holds a special place as the only female character I've ever actively loathed - and since there were no well-developed girls to balance her out (and no more L to keep me hooked despite myself)...yeah... Let's just say, whenever I twitch at Kishimoto's treatment of his female characters, I think of Death Note and realise it could be so, so much worse...

And yay Hermione! :D
