"I have been, and always shall be, your friend..."

So, I went to see Star Trek with my mum today, and it was a proper mother-daughter bonding session. She's an Old School Trekkie and Spock fangirl, and directly responsible for me mainlining Original Series Trek as a child, and for once, her and me are geeking out over the same thing. It's quite cool to be sharing some fannish time with my mum (even ( Read more... )

(even if she was crying over the line above, while I was wondering if anyone had written fic about old!Spock and young!Kirk in the cave yet ...I bet they have).
Oh, lolz. You have no idea.
This, I think, is the first:

Heh - I knew it! I watched that scene agog over the emotion and thinking 'this needs fic' - I knew K/S shippers would love it.

And my, that was hot! And seconding narie's plea for guidance! *flutters eyelashes* I've been intrigued by K/S ever since I got into slash (OS Trek was the first thing I was ever fannish about, back in the day), but the fandom's huge and daunting (forty years of meta, art and fic - no other fandom can come close).

*deliberately scrolls to avoid spoilers*

I still think of K/S as the original slash fic, so I am anxiously awaiting the rebirth of the fandom. I think it could get rather wanksty, however, with old fen and new fen, but I am paying no attention. Just gotta wait to be in the right country to see it.

Oh, man, if you havn't been around yet because you've not seen the film yet.... don't worry. Fandom is REBORN. And so far, it's been really really low wank; everyone's just really excited about new canon and new ships and shiny shiny new and everything. At least, it hasn't been wanky as far as I've seen, and I've been trolling new fic and whatnot like a madwoman.

Ooh, so you don't know me, but can you point me in the gereal direction of where to look for things? I'm a new convert, but I'm eager to dig a bit deeper!

hahaha, I'm a new convert too (to Trek fanfic, not Trek itself, LOL!!) but I have been a BEAST lately...you might want to check out the comms "st_reboot" and "newtrekslash" as well as the kink meme I linked to up there (a masterlist of all filled and unfilled prompts is in constant update). the comm "spock_uhura" has cannonballed after the film, naturally, and there's a new comm called "kirkspockuhura" (three guesses as to what goes on over there) if you're interested.
Finally, one kind soul has been cataloguing new K/S fic here:

That should keep you all busy for a while!!!

I just got back from seeing it and I'm still making some sort of high-pitched bat-sonar squealing! I'm a life-long fan of TOS and this was wonderful!

Lol - I was squeeing in the car! Mum had to keep telling me to keep my eyes on the road! :D I think we might be going back to see it again... It was so great, though - I expected to enjoy it, but I'd no idea how much! *shares in squee-age*

I know! My first fandom all shined up and new!

I saw it on IMAX so I need a bit to soak it all up before I think about seeing it again.

*pouts* IMAX? I'm jealous. I bet that was amazing.

Totally agree. The Spock/Uhura thing was a huge mistake to make. It humanised Spock too strongly and takes away all that growth potential that was part of the great dynamic Spock had with his fully human compatriots, and it reduces the one female character of note to a sex object. *sigh*

But yes, also agree with everything else. Oh, and your mum may surprise you - because a lot of us slashers are mum age and older, yeah? ;)

Lol - my mum's part of the original Trek generation. She was never a convention-goer, so I don't think she would have come across slash in her day. Like I said, I'd never dare ask, but I'm teaching her to use a computer, so I'll just wait to see if she's delighted or appalled when she discovers fandom! ;D

Uhura's one of my childhood heroines, and I'd always loved that she was always a professional Starfleet officer, never a love interest for any of the men. The whole 'female character's main role is as a LI' makes me twitch anyway - and I'd really enjoyed her part in the movie until that hit me out of left field. And surely Spock was supposed to be over-compensating towards his Vulcan side at that point in his life? *sigh* You put it much better than me about what it does to his character arc. All I could think was "um, but Spock wouldn't". I wish they hadn't done it, really, because everything else in the movie was completely bloody awesome. :D

I LOVED Star Trek! I used to watch the show with my dad when I was really young, but never really watched it when I was older. However, the movie makes me want to go back and rewatch all of the episodes.

I am even more tempted to just read the fanfic and get all my fannish-ness out!

Yeah, I totally think the romance was unnecessary, the plot was strong enough that I didn't NEED the vague romance in any way.

Lol - it did that to me! Mum splashed out on the films and the first series on DVD a while ago, but the rest of the episodes are on dodgy old videos. I think this might be the impetus we needed to club together towards the other two box sets! ;D

The romance did take the slightest edge of my squee, so I'm probably biased, but the film so didn't need it. It would have been so cool for Uhura and Spock to be friends. *sigh*
