You should totally apply. I know that in regular jobs, they can't discriminate based on sex unless it is critical to the job responsibilities, and I don't think they can argue that in this case. I don't know how it changes when casting a role for a TV show.
And somebody I know should do it, and I'm way too much of a wuss.
Second that--as for myself, it sounds like a fun gig, but I know I wouldn't have the stage/screen presence to pull it off. But I'd totally sit around and watch if you were hosting it ;).
Actually, in terms of TV host dynamics (is there such a phrase? I'm making it up, I guess), it was interesting to read about how they did casting for Mythbusters. They originally planned to build it around Jamie Hyneman, but he said that he didn't think he could carry it. So they got Adam Savage--and the pairing (I think) works great--Adam is both knowledgeable and the spazzy/fun host, while Jamie gives great depth of information and provides great straight-man interaction. From the Wikipedia article:
He is known for his calm, logical, no-nonsense demeanor, in contrast to Adam's unhinged, and sometimes juvenile behavior. Hyneman is often exasperated by Adam's antics and he sometimes squabbles with him on how to go about busting myths.
