adventures in quilting part 1: how to sew

I think I tried sewing a button back onto a pair of shorts once, and it didn't work out very well. That is the extent of my sewing experience prior to tonight. Tonight I sewed the outside of a pin cushion! I will post pictures tomorrow, once it is stuffed and finished. It is gloriously lopsided, and I adore it terribly. Wow that's exciting! I can sew a little but I'm completely intimidated by quilting. I can't wait to see what you come with! You might be able to pick up a sewing machine from a friend or on craigslist. Seems like lots of people have a machine sitting around waiting to go to a good home for free or super cheap. (That's how I got mine! ... it's not fancy whatsoever but it does the job).

BTW -- you prewash fabric to get any sizing out, so if it shrinks at all, it won't make your completed project all wonky and/or shrunken when you wash it for the first time. (:

...psh, I knew that.

:P

I am really excited to try quilting too, but since I've never sewn before (other than my cute little lopsided pin cushion!) I kind of want to get the basics down first. So I'll probably try a few simple sewing projects first, to practice technique, and then go into quilting :)

I can stitch up a tear in a shirt. That is the extent of my sewing. Earlier this year, in a fit of madness creativity, I bought a fairly inexpensive (still about $100, but my sources tell me this is cheap) sewing machine, which is also pink and white and oh so pretty. And used it all of twice. I learned quickly that sewing just isn't for me. Now I have a perfectly good sewing machine gathering dust. Poop.
