I can give some "general guidelines" but I think Aimee did a better job. :p
I suggest a low magic using class or a non-magic using class, that is unless you actually understand the magic system. (I never could learn it) Rouge, Monk, Warrior, possibly Ranger.
Figure out your character's alignment, like Aimee says, Lawful usually is your best bet for monk. I prefer Chaotic Good, I work for the "good of all" not the "the law requires me to be a good person". Slight difference, but it makes a big impact on how the character reacts to stimuli.
Race, Race, Race.
Are you thinking pointy elf character or maybe human? Class and Race don't always matter....but some work better than others. :)

ok with you andy i would say that a monk would be great.... saying that you can stay lawful... if not try a cleric of a war deity you get to wear full plate no penatlies any weapons and throw spells that have compontants plus get to turn or rebuke undead....( heal spell baby)i there are also many prestiage classes for clerics at higher levels.. plus think of it this way if you are playing with jenny and mike is dm ing do as they did and ask questions take advice ... but sit next to jenny as she did me when they started and she will be able to answer most the ?`s you have.. plus give hints.... and never forget that if a enemy comes in or out of your threat range you get a attack ofopptunity.. ie melee sword range or halbert .... or ranged att the distance your bow can shoot
