zhou mi always smiles harder when kyuhyun's around. it's something that everyone notices, from hankyung who is around them the most, to heechul who only has to see them together once to realise. love is radiation and it contaminates everything it comes near to.
it's something that he doesn't even realise himself, the way his smile gets wider as his eyes get softer whenever kyuhyun walks past him and lets his hand pause against his hip. when kyuhyun sings, zhou mi smiles because he's proud, of something that he had no hand in but something that he feels he can be proud of anyway.
he doesn't notice his smile because he can't see himself, there's not a mirror hanging in front of his face at every given moment, but zhou mi knows that he's in love with kyuhyun. zhou mi likes being around kyuhyun, because kyuhyun looks good, sounds good, is good. makes him feel good. he knows he's in love because of the way his heart turns warm with every touch. he knows because his stomach flips when kyuhyun comes into the room. he knows because he feels the cliches.
he knows because of how happy he is whenever he gets to say 'kui xian'. he knows because of how much taller he stands when kyuhyun gets something right in chinese, and how much his shoulders slump whenever kyuhyun says it's a stupid language. it's zhou mi's language and kyuhyun needs to be good at it. zhou mi knows he's in love with kyuhyun because of how much he wants kyuhyun to speak his language.
so when kyuhyun climbs into his bed and mumbles about how homesick he is, zhou mi moves his limbs out of the way and makes room, because it's hard to fit the two of them, tall and gangly, on the bed, but they manage, and he curves around kyuhyun's body and mumbles back in chinese, sleepy and warm and feeling the way kyuhyun's arms fit around him in every single nerve ending. 'good night,' kyuhyun will murmur in chinese, and zhou mi falls helplessly through an abyss that he doesn't think will ever end.
zhou mi is happy being in love with kyuhyun. zhou mi doesn't ask for anything more, or anything less. he recognises the boundaries. he adheres to the boundaries and touches the line with the very tips of his toes and never once steps over. the line is there for a reason. the line is there because kyuhyun doesn't love him back, and the line is something zhou mi has drawn himself, with a microphone stand in the sand of his life. he touches it sometimes with his fingers, thinks about blurring the edges, blurring them so much that he could legitimately step over and fit his mouth against kyuhyun's. he never does. he loves kyuhyun too much to do it.
