My Tinhat Shines for Spencer and Jon
A couple weeks ago I had a fabulous weekend of fangirl fun with greendreaming, fuschia, and jjtaylor. It was made of awesome. JJ has captured some of the higlights very nicely here, but for me, the best part was getting the chance to finally do some serious pimping of Panic. I've been trying for ages to get Greenie into Panic, but without much luck. I understand - it's hard to tell them apart in the beginning. Also, JJ raised an important point: there is so much potential for angst when you have A. the Ryan Ross Factor ( frowny face of doooooom) and B. the Brendon In The Closet Factor that keeps us up at night with worry.
But. People. There is this beautiful thing in Panic! at the Disco that is made of magical awesomeness and puppydogs and pumpkin spice lattes and bright shinyness, and that thing is Spencer Smith and Jon Walker.
So, a quick refresher. Panic! consists of Ryan Ross on guitar, backup vocals, mandolin, banjo, etc.; Brendon Urie as lead singer, on guitar, piano, and various other instruments; Spencer Smith on drums; and Jon Walker on bass, backup vocals, occasional keyboard, etc.
This is Panic! at the Disco:
If you're having a hard time telling them apart, start by finding the Real Boy. That's Jon Walker. In this picture, he's on the left, in a suit and t-shirt. (Other signs of Real Boyness include flipflops, jeans, and facial hair.) Now look for the boy with 1. the most flamboyant scarf or outfit and 2. the pretty girl hair. That would be Ryan Ross. Now you only have two Panic boys to figure out! Brendon usually wears a scarf of some sort and has shorter hair. This leaves Spencer.
Spencer Smith
Spencer generally has two looks. Girl!Spencer:

Sometimes, though, he looks remarkably like Eddie Izzard.

In general, Spencer just looks good.

Brendon is the one talking. Jon has just returned from a shower or something, and Spencer is sitting on the arm of the couch. Jon turns to Spencer, and, though it's hard to make out, asks him, "hey, wanna go smoke?" ... Look at Spencer's face. And then Jon's massive grin, and then his glance at the camera.
Seriously. I'm passing out the tinhats now. They're so shiny and fashionable. Spencer's little face!
Essential video #4. The Hand. (aka the Tinhat Moment to End All Tinhat Moments)
At the very beginning of this video, Jon has his hand on Spencer's shoulder. When he realizes the cameras are rolling, he pulls his hand away. And then the look they exchange - ♥! phineasjones showed this one to me, and I really didn't think my tinhat could have gotten any bigger or shinier, but then it did.
I mean, seriously!

He's also an amateur photographer. This is well used in fic also, like in lordessrenegade's Subtleties of Black. Oops, recs come later! Anyhoo...
Sometimes his band gets him to dress up in funny clothes. He doesn't like it.
phineasjones says it makes him look like a cat that someone has dressed in a sweater. She is so smrt.
But lately he's been able to wear what he wants. No more ruffles. Just a little guyliner.

This indie coffeehouse AU is Ryan POV, and primarily is a Brendon/Ryan story, but the Spencer/Jon here is adorable, and also, this story has such great Ryan voice that you can't help but laugh and love him. Guest appearances by pretty much everyone in bandom, including Mikey on tambourine.
