Yaaaaay! I used to live very near San Francisco, so here's my picks:
-Ghiradelli Square (ice cream and chocolate!) -The Wharf (sea lions, clam chowder and/or chili in a bread bowl) -The Golden Gate Bridge (you can walk or bike across) -Twin Peaks -Lombard Street (street with the most zigzags!) -The Castro (LGBT+ friendly) -Postcard Row (from "Full House" opening credits!) -The Marin Headlands/Sausalito (if you have a car, but there are bus tours too) -Teatro Zinzanni (tix are expensive, but worth it! This was our "wedding reception".) -Bay Area Theatersports (improv) http://www.improv.org -- So fun!!! And cheap -- student shows are only $7 bucks, and "regular" shows are $20.
Have a good time and tell us all about it! xoxoxo.
I actually like Portland more than San Francisco, for the ease of getting around. So I think you should visit Oregon too. ;-) I CAN TAKE YOU TO THE BEST BOOKSTORE IN THE WORLD -- POWELL'S!!! xo.
I wonder if it would be worth looking into finding a kayak or two on craigslist if it's something you guys like to do? Then you can pick where you go rather than going to the nearest rental? Also.. finding used kayaks vs. rental prices? Hmm!
Kayaking is something I always really wanted to do, but since I couldn't keep my cochlear implant on while I was in the boat it ends up falling outside of my comfort zone.
I looked that up, actually. In order to justify buying one, we'd have to go kayaking a LOT. It seems like there are some really cheap ones but the ones I would think anyone would actually want are in the several hundred dollar range to a couple thousand, which is not in the cards right now. I'd have to go look at them in person to figure out why some are so cheap and to compromise on the price (it's not like I need one that can handle rapids or something, that's not likely something I'll ever want to do, nor do I think I'll need a racing one).

But yeah, I've definitely thought about it.
