When I was a kid, I read a library book about a boy so ugly that his brothers made him wear a bag over his head. In the illustrations, it was an onion sack, with the 'O's in Onions cut out for eyeholes. Nobody I asked could ever tell me what book it was ( Read more... )

How awesome that you were able to find that so quickly!

William O'Steele is from my neck of the woods, and lived on Signal Mountain just outside Chattanooga. I always loved his book The Perilous Road. More trivia: He was married to Mary Govan, who was a naturalist and wrote one of my favorite nature books, "The Living Year." She also wrote children books as "Wilson Gage." And there's another writer connected to them somehow - Christine Govan, who wrote The Curious Clubhouse - she may have been Mary's sister? Just an amazing family.
