Huh, I think I totally missed the Rushdie bit when I read it last year... what was it?

There's a bit when Millat is like twelve. Samad and some other guys are talking about how sacrilegious some person is, and Millat is talking similarly with his friends as he takes the subway to an angry demonstration and burns some books on tv. Then Millat comes home and his mom has burned all his Western-culture movies and trophies and stuff, saying "Fine, you want to be so devout? There you go."

I could have misread this scene as being about Rushdie since the book is never named but that was my take.
