Couple of books. Also, I saw Charlie Wilson's War, which is recommended and is kind of like a Heinlein novel as written by Aaron Sorkin.

At one point a character is kept alive by the author for the sole purpose of having the Singularity explained to him at great length, which seems like it borders on being a fate worse than death.

Hah.

I can't remember whether that's the same as the horribly book-stopping "information wants to be free" speech that I noted, but I don't care enough to go and find out.
