Origami
The clock hanging on the wall ticks, the nervous jumping of seconds too regular to be a heartbeat. A cold draft swims in through the open window and leans into Changmin, brushing by like a memory, leaving behind the rise of gooseflesh on his skin.
Yoochun lies next to him, a parallel body. An inch of space runs between them like a miniature river, and Changmin is suddenly curious to know what Yoochun's heartbeat sounds like. He wants to rest the side of head against Yoochun's chest, press his ear close to his heart and listen. Listen to secrets, confessions and the songs that Yoochun has yet to write.
Changmin looks away when Yoochun turns towards him.
Outside, Junsu is laughing. Probably on the phone with Junho. Strains of Jaejoong's piano playing can be heard. Occasionally, the sound of Yunho's voice, too faint to make out the words. The rustling of leaves, exchanging secrets from tree to tree, carried by the patient wind.
If Changmin holds his breath, stays very still, he can hear Yoochun's quiet breathing.
Time like this is rare. Their days are always a blur of activity, draining them of every bit of energy they hold in their bodies. Changmin cannot remember the last time there was time to just lie down like this, and not do anything.
Still, he cannot relax. Not when Yoochun is lying next to him, and there is no one else in the room. He can hide his racing heartbeat from Yoochun, but not from himself.
Changmin is sick of looking at the ceiling. He turns his head, slow and cautious, and comes face to face with Yoochun, their noses nearly brushing. Yoochun's eyes are closed and he looks like he is asleep. His eyelashes brush the skin stretched over his cheekbones, thin and fragile as rice paper.
Changmin's heart automatically folds into itself, tractable as a piece of paper; an origami boat floating alone in a vast, sublime ocean.
Changmin has no idea how long he lies there, not moving, just looking at Yoochun's peaceful face.
Yoochun makes a small noise, and shifts, bringing his knees up, crossing the river of space between them. His knees touch Changmin's legs, and heat seeps through fabric, contagious as a disease. Yoochun lies there, breathing even and deep, and Changmin thinks Yoochun is really asleep.
He parts his lips, his mouth suddenly dry and parched. He feels strangely thirsty, but it isn't a thirst that water can quench.
"I love you," Changmin whispers, weighing the words on his tongue, testing them. And then, more firmly, he repeats the declaration. "I love you."
Yoochun's eyelids flutter, and then blink open, as if re-opening to see Changmin for the very first time.
