The Truth About
Wooyoung's To-Do List, Item #6: Tell Nichkhun That Important Thing before it's too late, but before this can be done, see To-Do Item #9.
Wooyoung's To-Do List, Item #9: Find the suitable/right words to explain That Important Thing so Nichkhun will understand what I really mean and not think I am a complete creep. Even though I probably am.
"It's time to wake up," Nichkhun says, as he shakes Wooyoung awake. Wooyoung swipes at him half-heartedly and pulls the blanket over his head. Nichkhun snatches the blanket away and prods Wooyoung's face with an insisting finger. "Come on," Nichkhun urges, nudging and shaking Wooyoung. "If you don't get up now, we'll be late,” he threatens.
Wooyoung rolls over and opens his eyes, sleepy and confused.
Nichkhun smiles down at him and Wooyoung sees that he’s still in his pyjamas. That smile (combined with the sight of his messy hair) ruins the threatening effect he was going for and Wooyoung lets his eyes drift shut again.
"Good morning," Nichkhun says loudly. "Get up now." He claps both hands onto either side of Wooyoung's face and squeezing playfully, startling Wooyoung awake -
(And Wooyoung is sixteen years old again, caught in the hurricane of first love, a high school boy standing in front of his schoolmate, a confession struggling in his throat. He feels his heart trip and stumble as he loses his breath over a single smile.)
- "Get up, get up, get up," Nichkhun chants until Wooyoung sits up reluctantly. Nichkhun hauls him to his feet and pushes him from behind, steering him towards the bathroom. They nearly collide with Junsu, who's on his way out of the bathroom, beads of water dripping from his face.
Wooyoung is shoved in front of the sink.
"You have five minutes," Nichkhun tells him, and turns around to leave. Wooyoung grabs his elbow to stop him.
"What?" Nichkhun asks, eyes narrowing and searching Wooyoung’s face. “I have to get changed," he says. When Wooyoung doesn’t answer, worry flashes into Nichkhun’s eyes. “What happened?” Nichkhun asks.
There's something Wooyoung needs to tell him, but he doesn't know the right words, doesn't know how to string them together, doesn't know how to coax his feelings out of their ambiguous states. Wooyoung exhales and lets go of Nichkhun. "Nothing," he says.
Nichkhun gives him a strange look and looks like he's about to say something when Jaebum appears and shouts at the both of them. "We are all going to be late," he yells and Wooyoung resists the urge to point out the fact that Jaebum hasn't gotten dressed either. "There's no time to stand around and chat," Jaebum continues yelling, grabbing Nichkhun and pushing him out of the way.
Wooyoung blinks and Nichkhun's gone. He shakes his head slowly and twists the tap, splashing water onto his face. Even after he brushes his teeth, the taste of his wordless confession continues to linger in his mouth.
Wooyoung never gets a chance to tell Nichkhun That Important Thing that day, or the next day, or the day after that. Time just passes, and That Important Thing He Needs to tell Nichkhun remains trapped in his throat, growing like weeds.
On the anniversary of their third year together as a group, after a celebration, Wooyoung goes to bed with his head buzzing pleasantly from alcohol.
He dreams, he dreams of Nichkhun and a faceless girl, sitting side by side, arms linked and heads bent intimately together. He wakes, panting and shivering. Next to him, Chansung is snoring lightly with his mouth hanging open.
The electronic display of the clock on the table reads 4:08 AM. Wooyoung rolls sideways and stares at the closed door of Nichkhun's bedroom. He does this for a few minutes, and when looks back at the clock again, it says 4:11 AM. Frustration crawls up his neck like heat, and it grows unbearable as an itch. Making a split-second decision, Wooyoung throws the covers off him and pads quietly towards Nichkhun's room.
He hesitates with his hand on the doorknob - he clenches his teeth together, praying for strength, inhales, holds his breath and turns. The knob rotates and he pushes the door open with a trembling hand.
Darkness drapes heavy across the room, and Wooyoung can barely make out Nichkhun's sleeping figure on the bed.
He shuts the door silently behind him, feeling like a stalker and a creep as he wades through the dark gingerly. Cautiously, he bends down and touches Nichkhun's shoulder. Nichkhun shifts and turns slightly, but doesn't wake. Wooyoung whispers his name, a hoarse rasp, and taps the side of Nichkhun's face.
Nichkhun snaps awake and swears loudly as he jerks away from Wooyoung. "Fucking hell, who on earth - " he hisses, and then stops, squinting at Wooyoung in the dark. "Wooyoung?" he whispers, his voice losing the tense edge. "What are you doing?" Shock gives way to annoyance, which morphs into alarm. "Is something wrong?"
"Nothing," Wooyoung says, and the silence stretches between them, miles and oceans and worlds, and then, they both move at the same time - Wooyoung towards Nichkhun, and Nichkhun shifting inwards to make space for Wooyoung.
Wooyoung crawls into the bed, the sheets sticky with warmth from Nichkhun's body heat.
"There's something that I've always wanted to tell you," Wooyoung says, all in one nervous breath. There may not be another time, he tells himself. If he lets this moment slip away, he may never get another chance and he will live his entire life wishing he was brave enough. It’s better to regret the things you’ve done than regret the things you haven’t, he tells himself.
"What?" Nichkhun murmurs, and presses a foot against Wooyoung's ankle.
"I think you must already know," Wooyoung says and closes his eyes as he feels Nichkhun's finger on the back of his neck, sliding downwards, travelling along the curve of his spine. There's no way you wouldn't, he thinks. He recalls all the times he held onto Nichkhun’s hands for a second too long, remembers of all the times Nichkhun caught him staring, thinks of all the times he hugged Nichkhun too tight - too close - too long. Nichkhun must know that he is the first one Wooyoung looks for, when he’s in need of support, or comfort, or just company.
"Let's go to sleep, we have to wake up early in the morning," Nichkhun says, and Wooyoung wonders if it's a rejection, a subtle way of saying no, I don't feel the same way, I'm sorry.
Nichkhun moves behind Wooyoung, and there's the rustle of blanket and movement as Nichkhun finds a more comfortable position.
Then he says, "I know." And then softer - almost but not too soft for Wooyoung to hear - he says, "I love you too."
Eventually, Wooyoung falls asleep, and when they wake up the next morning, little has changed. Except Nichkhun catches Wooyoung on his way out of the bathroom and kisses him with his back against the door and for the rest of the day, Wooyoung has to mentally slap himself to resist gazing at Nichkhun like a love-struck teenager.
In the end, Wooyoung forgets to tell Nichkhun all the important things he wanted to say (I've been in love with you for a long time, I think you're beautiful, and you're the only one who makes me feel like such a fool) but it doesn't matter because Nichkhun steals the words easily from him, tongue licking into Wooyoung's mouth and fingers curling around Wooyoung's heart.
