I really like this.
The whole fact that the protagonist is referred to as 'the boy'/'the man' and also goes through this large anachronistic journey reminds me a lot of 'the Alchemist' by Paolo Coelho.
Also, I like the whole transition of the boy to the man. And I especially like the scenes in which the boy reminisces about his mother and the coy (koi?) fish for the imagery
