Love comes in many styles love_leah January 17 2006, 20:19:29 UTC
I like that idea that love comes in many shapes and sizes and styles, just like poetry does. Love poetry comes in many different styles, whether it is the tradition sonnet, or it's a verse poem that turns out to be an amazing declaration of love. No matter what it is, love poetry really hasn't been the same since the Troubadours and Petrarch. Rarely do we see poems that are not about expressing one's true emotions (that is in love poems). I really enjoy (love!) love poetry, because it helps me tap into my feelings and helps me write love poems. I guess you could say it is my inspiration to express the love I feel.

Some good points here, Jenna. A few small things to clear up: troubadours didn't write sonnets -- the sonnet was invented in Italy (Sicily) toward the end of the troubadour era. The typical troubadour poem was what in Provençal they called a canso -- a song. Also, Petrarch didn't "often" use the image of the deer -- only once, as I recall.
Language point: well, yes, the troubadour poems, like the sonnets, were usually (not always) written by a "male" for a "female" -- but in the human race we call them men and women....
