Buffer friend is essentially a friend that sorta there to support you whilst on a scary outing.

Take the time my friend George asked me to the movies. I was so scared that it was actually date that I dragged 4 of my friends with me so that I wouldn't be alone.

I'll be your buffer friend but the pond is sorta in the way.
