Songs for a Sunday

Aug 30, 2009 18:27

It's been one of those peaceful Sunday afternoons. One where work was finished this morning, one without social and familial obligations, one where the rain smells so fresh you just have to throw the windows open and let the damp in. Perfect really. There are definitely times when words are superfluous and you just want to feel the deep, resonance ( Read more... )

I am very ignorant about classical music so I'm poking at this entry in an effort to learn more ;). :D

Hey hon, how are you doing? Any news?

Poke away. I'm not all that much of an expert. I do know what I like though. And all these pieces are wonderful, so I hope you enjoy them.

Hey, how was the party, birthday girl? My aunt had a shocking pink (as grandma used to call it) birthday cake, topped with little blur and purple cakes in the shape of flip flops - truly fabulous.

I love all these songs. I just has the ipod on classical (not that all of these songs are classical) and I was putting this list together and it made me laugh to see the variety. There are people who think that classical is all the same, but Tocatta and Fuge and Spring? Pretty much polar opposites.:)

Some gorgeous pieces here. Specially the Gershwin.

I love Rhapsody in Blue. I have always liked it, but then I was in an orchestra that played it and it was adoration at first note. It's so gorgeously messy. And this recording is particularly so.

Tannhauser's my baby though. Wagner and I have our bad moments, but then I listen to Tannhauser and I forgive him everything; even the stupid wedding march. (to be fair, wedding march issues may be more mine then his.:))

I do love those Sundays. Mmmm.

I am ashamed to admit I really know nothing about classical music, but I do like instrumental (love the BSG sdtks) and am thus excited to check each song out. Thanks for the recs!

There is zero coherency to this list, I just put down what I was listening too today, but I love them all.:)

I'm willing to bet you know a bunch of these. Most people know a lot more classical and ragtime and jazz then they think they do.

I'm going to come back to listen to the second half of your selections later today, but I'm enjoying your picks.

I see the Joplin and ragtime- do you ever listen to Django Reinhardt?

I'm glad you are. I just sort of was rolling through the non-vocal music on my ipod.

I don't know a bout Reinhardt, so probably not. I like ragtime but I know very little about it, so I may of heard his stuff and not known it. I will check him out.

I'm not a jazz person, but his is more... guitar influenced? jazz. It's very close to ragtime.
