This all makes sense to me. Especially the boot analogy - I definitely agree with the assertion that being poor is expensive. If you have a couple of grand in your current account (or even your savings account), so you can make large up-front payments without worries, life becomes much simpler. If you are living paycheque to paycheque, you can't shell out these sums. Which means you have to either buy on credit, buy a less expensive version, or get screwed
