We've seen a lot about this over here. Although I never saw the show, I certainly knew of Jimmy Saville and 'Jim'll fix it'. It's all just sickening, and the acquiescence of the nurses, the others who must have known - that's just as disturbing, as you say. Advising kids to 'pretend to be asleep'? It's not up to kids to protect themselves!

It's like the Catholic church paedophiles that the bloody church is still protecting; there's *such* a clear, moral line here, there *are* no grey areas. It's not difficult. You don't use children to gratify your sexual urges. There. That's not so hard to understand, is it?

Still, I don't think it's humanity that's evil per se. These are the outriders, the deviants called such because they do deviate so far from what the majority considers the right thing to do.

It's quite unbelievable how many people must have known about this and turned a blind eye, or even facilitated it. It seems it actually is difficult for some people to understand how horrific it is for the victims, or they just don't give a shit. I find it hard to imagine people really existing for either of those options but they clearly do, and far more than I'm comfortable with. And yes, the church have shown themselves to be unforgiveable assholes in this - they have no moral high ground (if they ever did) and should just shut up and go away. They just won't, though. Nasty pieces of work, the lot of them.

The news today is reporting the count is up to 200 likely victims and the circle of offenders has grown, with prosecutions looking likely. This is going to run on for a very long time.

He actually only died last October, nearly a year ago. People are saying that society was different in the 1970s, that we weren't so paranoid about potential child abuse. But, as you say, a lot of it had to do with his status. Children and adults who tried to speak out weren't believed. Savile himself blackmailed people. He was basically a bully who manipulated the establishment and used his charity raising power to dissuade people from jeopardising the loss of money for good causes. I guess you could say that individual children were sacrificed for the good of many other children. Horrible when you think about it. When you look back, at his autobiography and things he's said in public and on TV, he wasn't particularly secretive about it, but apart from those who knew or suspected but were scared to say anything, other people just didn't see it, either because they didn't want to, or because it simply didn't occur to them to imagine that he wasn't joking. He even spoke out in support of Gary Glitter at one point, opining that all ( ... )

I didn't realise he'd died last year - I'm always confused by which celebrities are still around and which aren't. Just can't keep that stuff in my head, and I thought he'd gone much earlier.

And now people are wondering about a whole ring of paedophiles with Saville at the heart. That such a thing has been going on for so long is what I'm still having trouble wrapping my mind around. That it was reported so often, and yet they couldn't get an investigation to fruition. And that the documentary relied on such a few people who bravely came forward and it's precipitated this flood of victims... those words like horrifying and appalling and outrageous just don't feel enough to describe it all. And in all this, I haven't even seen that damn documentary yet.

We've had something similar the last year or so here, not quite on the level of celebrity, but still, a big deal - assistant coach at one of the major college sports teams (forty years of winning seasons, blah, blah.) He ran a 'charity' for underprivileged boys ( ... )
