A coworker of mine had an amnio with her third child and was told her son would be born with Down's. He wasn't. He is a perfectly normal 12 year old today.
Granted, these medical tests have improved significantly over the years but who are we to play God?
Things like this just shouldn't happen. Maybe this is completely ignorant, but if a couple has a "disabled" child, it's for a reason. They could probably learn a lot from their little one.
I'm going to use this article in the class, probably on Friday. It'll be, I suspect, an interesting conversation, but I'm a little scared... (I have not been impressed, so far, by the thoughts of my students.) May I use some of your thoughts as well, in class, to generate discussion?
Be my guest! I'm all for generating discussion - I think it is the first step toward tolerance, even if people still ultimately hold different opinions from each other.
