Woah. Autopsy.

There is a video of a human autopsy on Google Video. I expected it to be more disturbing than it was, but it was actually not that bad. Very educational. It's the first real complete autopsy I've seen. I understand there was one shown on UK television some years ago but I didn't get to see that. The only one they showed on US television was the ( Read more... )

Well, since I'm having breakfast right now, I'll probably wait a bit before watching. :)

I did see an autopsy several years ago. The act of trying to solve a mystery - in that case, the cause of death, did a lot to remove any of "the horror" or squeamishness that one might naturally expect to feel.

I just recently did an extensive search for murder/crime scene/suicide photo reference, so I'm all past being grossed out (it was for an illustration job, f.y.i.). To me, dead bodies aren't horrible, but I probably couldn't deal with the smell. Having said that, I had to calm down for about 5 minutes before disposing of a squirrel that made an unsuccessful "Flying Walenda" leap in my front garden the other day...... It wasn't contagion that threw me, it was the prospect of being close to something that no longer had an animus. Since the knowledge of infectious disease is only about 200 years old, I think that our universal horror is probably more linked to avoiding something that is no longer what we are in nature.

Fascinating. I'm amazed by the precision. I think it's important for everyone to see something like this in their lives because it really puts things in perspective. Death is the great unifier. We're all the same on the inside... relatively, anyway.

Thanks for sharing, Lisa!

One of my friends from my Grad. school years is an Assistant Coroner. I've seen some of this stuff up close and personal. I have another friend who is a fabulous artist -- she used to be a crime scene investigator. She said people always asked her why the dead bodies didn't freak her out and she said it was because the "person" was gone. Only the "wrapping" was left behind.
