Eastern Promises

I went to see Eastern Promises over the weekend and it's amazing. Gritty and violent and very unpleasant especially if you are a fan of LotR-era Viggo Mortensen. I am, but I was not so married to that image that I couldn't let go and enjoy nasty and vicious Viggo. He also joins my growing list of favorite actors whose penises I have seen. The scene ( Read more... )

Did you see him in Cronenberg's "A History of Violence"? This actor and director work well together = he is the embodiment of fury tightly and dangerously restrained.

I can't wait to see it.

Hi Inns!!! :D

Ewww, that last line gave me goosebumps! Hmm...this movie looks really good and I really like Viggo's acting. I'm surprised at how many males are now stripping themselves fully for the camera. Oddly, I don't think I've ever seen a movie of anyone showing off the 'full monty'. ;-)

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Viggo, even in the LotR's trilogy(although I have to admit he had vastly improved by Return of the King). There have been two instances in my life that I have truly wanted to get up and leave a movie theatre, one of them being A History of Violence. This movie sounds very similar, but if it has Naomi Watts, it may be worth seeing. The synopsis I read was kind of vague though. What exactly is the plot?

The basic synopsis is that a 14 year old girl dies in childbirth and the midwife who delivered the baby wishes to find out who the girl is and locate her family. The only clue is a diary the girl has with her, written in Russian. The midwife attempts to get it translated by taking it to her Russian uncle, and also finds a business card leading her to a restaurant owned, unbeknownst to her, by a high-up Russian mobster. Viggo plays a driver to the mobster, who is attempting to get higher in rank by doing other jobs for him and looking after his layabout son. Without giving too much away, everybody in the film is more than they seem, except for perhaps Naomi Watts, who plays a very straightforward and honest character, a foil for all the corruption and secrets around her. Viggo has this amazing icy demeanor which only changes when he's right about to do something. It's not normally the kind of thing I'd go to watch, but the actors drew me in and it turned out to be a very nice tight thriller.

I heard about this on NPR when Talk of the Nation hostess was completely gaga over this film and interviewed Cronenberg and Mortensen. She was almost breathless and ALSO asked about this scene, saying it affected her more than anything she has seen in films in years. Steve and I saw History of Violence, and was impressed with the writing and the twists (but it seemed to go on and on and on after it was "really" over). This one interview convinced me I wanted to see it, and now with your endorsement I will!

A History of Violence is one of those that I really keep meaning to say and never seem to get around to. Gunning for this weekend :D
