It's been an interesting few days...

So. I'm sure you've all read about online romance scams where somebody finds out a person they've been corresponding with for quite awhile turns out not to be who they say they are. You've also probably read accounts of scams wherein the scammer doesn't even exist. Here's a really interesting one I read about sometime last year. It's quite ( Read more... )

Oh. Yikes. O_o I've heard of these things happening, but I've never read any real accounts of it. I'm so sorry for your brother--why is it the good guys always get burned? *shakes head*

I'd be flying out to Iowa too if something like that happened. I hope everything works out.

So true. It's no wonder sensitive people get cynical if this is how they get treated when they open up :( Thanks for your kind words.

Learn from my lesson! Your bro may read this if you think it will help... mercurylass January 15 2008, 17:32:33 UTC
First, don't laugh, Pu-lease don't laugh! But buy him "Ten Stupid Things Men Do to Mess up Their Lives" and make him read it. He sounds like the rescuing type. Which can be bad because they like to rescue damsels in distress, which only leaves you with a distressed damsel who can't fix her own life and it never works (except for the damsel ( ... )

Thanks for the hugs *gives one to brother* It's a very weird feeling when you feel bad for somebody who's hurting but you secretly feel like they're upset for no good reason. Ever since the "bad news" I had that bad feeling like something wasn't right, but I couldn't say anything.

I'm happy for your well wishes, thank you.

Jesus, Lisa. I don't know what to say. A former model/vet in training can't afford to make a long distance phone call?! Yeah, I'd say that should send up some red-flags! If this girl is stringing your brother along(as is most likely the case), then at least the most he is out is the price of a phone card... financially, anyway. I'm very sorry for the emotional pain she is putting him through, and I hope that it doesn't cause any long term distress. Frankly, I'm surprised she hasn't asked him for money or anything yet. I mean, what do people like this want? Tell your brother that there are lots of good woman out there and not to loose heart. This kind of thing happens to lots of people. My room-mate had a long distance relationship for almost two years with a guy in another state, but every time they were supposed to meet he would disappear or bale out. Turns out the pictures he had sent her of "himself" were actually pictures of some Indian actor. I forget all the details, but it was a remarkably similar situation. Our thoughts are ( ... )

For some reason I hadn't considered that she "borrowed" some pictures from somebody else...she's only sent him like three total so it's possible. Ick, that makes it even worse somehow. It would mean she's been messing with him from the beginning.

That girl better be in a fucking coma or... *fumes*

Oh, and a slight update: The Iowa DMV website says if you've had a seizure in the last 6 months you can't drive. You need a doctor to say you're clear. So her story about being behind the wheel when it happened doesn't quite work. Curiouser and curiouser...

just got to this now, after reading the subsequent update....

Sounds like Shauna is a game-player of the highest order, though I doubt that she's a scammer/grifter otherwise she'd have gotten more out of your brother than a phone card by now. Although he has decided to accept her explanations for the moment, you should (in a sisterly way) encourage him to find someone to date in the REAL world (easier said than done, I know...) - it's too easy to invent a cooler, more mysterious persona online. The old fashioned way is still the best ( ... )

You know, I think your take on this sounds pretty accurate. I was wondering too what she was getting out of lying, since she hasn't asked for money or anything that I know of. I also think you're right about her having to be upfront before things can continue, she's put herself in doubt and it's her job to straighten things out. I hope he sees it that way. I do plan on telling him all this soon if things don't change. I'm trying not to butt in too much but there's only so much bullshit I can take :)
