Glad you're having a good time. I like reading posts like these because of the hope I have of one day making one myself.
That's funny about the Japanese class, but I'm not surprised. Seriously though, I fucking new katakana before I could speak 10 sentences. I sat in on a beginner class at NCSU about 2 years ago and understood probably 75% of what was being said. Not being confident about my japanese at all, I think the state of NC is bad at Japanese courses. But maybe the intermediate would be skullfuckingly hard. Who knows.
Of course, as usual UNC Chapel Hill's department is probably at a godlike level, but they get the best of everything...
I know you can do it. I damn near lost my mind at the end, already accepted but then almost flunking Statistics at FTCC... But I had already visited the campus and met my major's advisor, so I was determined to make it out of that rat-hole. Get a serious taste for where you want to go, and then don't take no for an answer.
A 10 story library?coup_d_etatAugust 22 2006, 17:27:59 UTC
If ever there was a time this place felt like the middle of nowhere, it's now.
Our library is only two stories, and the 'fiction' section of it is non-existant.
On another note, when I took Japanese in grade school, katakana was part of the first level course. We learned it like, 3rd week. Still, even if it's just a little bit of stuff, it's better to get it out the way now, then to get to intermediate and feel lost.

This school is kind of at a weird place right now. It's always been a dinky public school (not that's a bad thing...) but now it's making the transition into a bad-ass school. I'm lucky to be getting here now, while the good changes are taking place, but before it becomes impossible to get in...
That's what I mean about the katakana... You'd think you would learn that first... But then a whole bunch of complex grammar stuff is sprinkled in, so you can't just skip ahead four or five levels if you don't want to be lost (though I was tempted...)
But after coming from an area that had NO Japanese in any kind of school setting, I can't really complain.
I'm so proud of you. (this coming from someone 5 years younger than you) I miss you bunches, but the fact that you finally got out of this pit, and into college no less, totally overrides that. Here's wishing for you to make some friends! *cheers* And what's Nihon?

Thanks for your compliments! It's just so weird- I agonized on how to get out of Fayettenam for so many years that now that I've done it... It's unreal.
Oh, update: The Linguistics class is pimp. Maybe just because it's a 4000 level class, and the others I've gone to so far are basic 1000 and 2000 level, but this might be my favorite this semester.
