As some of you may know, I've always been rather mad about music.

As a fewer number of you would know, I also play the pipa and the guitar.  Strange considering that I'm really "english speaking" and hardly understand anything my pipa teacher (with no small amount of exasperation), teaches me the concepts.

It is to no small irony that my maternal ( Read more... )

Totally agree with you. :)

What's the official name for the "taugeh" system? I only know it as the "international" system.

I can read it provided you point me to where "a" is first. lol. I'm hopeless with that system.

Heh.. yeah, there are names. The number system has a name and the "taugeh" is called the "international system".

Ok lah, I think should ask disjecta, don't you think?

Uncle, primary one was 20 years ago ago. How to remember? Plus I studied in America in Primary 3 and they used different acronyms, so "luan" already. :D But thanks for the recap.

The number system is quite easy although you can easily get the rhythm wrong if you are careless. Doesn't help that the dragging of a beat is denoted by a floating full-stop e.g. 5 . 3 hahahahaha...

heehee! your shoes!!! i know we're all supposed to be looking at your pipa, but when i looked at the pictures all I could see were your shoes. Oh, and the b/w picture taken in bukit timah campus on ur wall. Talk about missing the wood for the trees. heh. Anyways. Let's go try the Corduory cafe! Since I missed it with leo and the rest. I've been craving flaky pastry, is the apple pie there served with flaky pastry?

Alamak, Obaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasan, don't have to go all the way to corduroy for flaky pastry lah. I've got some filo left in the freezy. I can make the turkish almond paste dessert I made a few weeks back. It's dead simple and absolutely delish.

No, the apple pie there either comes in the form of crumble or a biscuit crust thingamajig. Eh, apple pie got flaky pastry one meh? I guess we could endeavour to make one with flaky pastry one day: it should be a relatively simple affair to stew the apples with sugar / honey and rhubarb before chucking it into a casserole dish and pulling filo pastry over... :D Oh, or we could do a tartin!

Anyway, b/w photo is of you looking pensively away from the camera whilst sitting in the little carve-out, with the upper quad forming the backdrop...

As spoken, I love how accurate your hanyu pinyin is.

In any case, mom loves the pace at which i'm improving in my pipa, so much so that she thinks that I should upgrade my pipa to a performance grade one. She has unrealistic dreams of my joining the Singapore Chinese Orchestra... -_-"

I conveniently forgot to tell her that a performance grade pipa costs at least 1K + and a really good one (which is what I am aiming for) can hit for as much as 5k+, subject to inflation and scarcity of materials.

Apparently, it takes one WHOLE tree to make one very good performance grade pipa. Sigh... I feel like the destroyer of our earth. On a lighter note, however, everytime I lug my pipa around, I can boast that i'm carrying a tree on my back. :p
