Summary: It’s Sylvester and Jared took up another shift in the hotel bar because it’s also a Thursday and Jensen always plays the piano on Thursdays. Sequel to my Christmas ficlet Piano Man.

...for oldbatj who reminded me that, hey, Silvester is on a Thursday as well!

December 31...

“You know, it’s funny. I’ve known you a week and I already can’t stand to have you out of my reach.” Jared blushed, biting his lip as he clamped his fingers around Jensen to keep him from pulling away. He grinned at the other man as Jensen gave him a slightly exasperated look, which Jared found terribly adorable. He was pretty sure Jensen used that look on annoying students, too, and wondered if it wouldn’t make them even more annoying just so Mr. Ackles would look cute more often. But then Jared was a lovesick puppy and he knew it.

“Jay, if you crush my hand the manager will kill you for fucking up his Silvester entertainment”, Jensen said only half serious and Jared heaved an exaggerated sigh but let go with one last caress of his thumb. “Good boy.”

The sparkling smile made Jared want to kiss the other man, but this was their workplace and they had agreed to keep the PDA to a minimum. It was nearly time for Jensen’s second set of the evening, the one before the count down and the fireworks.

The hotel bar was a lot busier than on the Christmas Eve, the day Jared and Jensen had met. Pretty much every seat was taken by guests who came in after having dinner at the restaurant next door and those who just wanted a warm place to have a drink before the countdown started. It did also help that the hotel had a fantastic display of fireworks every year.

Jared looked at his watch to see that his break was over and tapped it to show Jensen that he had to get back to work. Sophia and Lauren were working with him tonight since the onslaught had been expected. Jensen had grinned when he came in and told Jared that he should bring out the Santa hat again since he already brought his elves. Okay, so maybe it was funny that both women didn’t really reach Jared’s shoulders and he stood like a freaking giant between the two of them. While the girls would lean up on the counter to take orders, Jared would stoop down. It was the curse of his height, but then the management seemed to like pairing him up with women, knowing that at his size, any troublemaker would think twice if it were worth the possible ass kicking. Not that Jared ever kicked ass… not that he ever needed to really.

He was already handing out the next stiff drink, when Jensen popped his head between two customers and grinned at Jared with a mad little twinkle in his eyes that made Jared’s knees a little weak. “This is your song…” the green-eyed man said before ducking back out and going towards the gleaming black piano stood at the front of the room. Jared frowned watching him go, not stopping in his task of making a Grasshopper for a small Indian woman, wondering what song could possibly be his? They had already heard Piano Man that night, it was Jensen’s regular opening song after all, and they didn’t know each other loner than a week, so they didn’t have something like a song, yet. Yes, yet. Jared had his hopes high for this one.

Jensen was a dream come true. He was funny and handsome and clever and Jared had felt himself falling hard for the green-eyed Texan. He was like a breath of fresh air and Jared sucked it in greedily. The week of Christmas and the days before Silvester both of them had no classes, Jensen teaching high school and Jared visiting grad school which both thankfully knew the concept of winter break. That had let to them having an awful lot of spare time and an amazing time spending it together. Jensen had playfully decided to keep Jared once he tasted his fettuccine Alfredo and Jared had never been more thankful to his momma’s cooking lessons. Obviously it was true that a good cook got a good man. He had called her the next morning thanking her for being so awesome.

When the first music from the piano sounded, Jared’s smile turned into a wide grin and he knew that what was food to Jensen was music to Jared. He loved what Jensen could do on the keys of a piano. The music was tentative and sweet, soft to a degree that made Jared wonder how such a heavy wooden construction could emit such careful a sound. Then again, he wasn’t surprised because he was sure under Jensen’s caress, even a grizzly would be purring softly. The man knew the art of persuasion, Jared had found out quite pleasantly.

Jared was already mesmerized by the time Jensen started the first verse. Sometimes he suspected Jensen of being a wizard of some sort because, damn, the guy enchanted him without even really trying.

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide

The barkeeper saw Jensen’s shy smile and knew it to be true. For someone who liked to sing in front of dozens of people and stand in front of a class full of teenagers, he was pretty shy. But Jensen just pulled all eyes on himself even if he was just walking through the mall. He couldn’t hide. Jared had asked him about how a shy person could enjoy such attention demanding jobs. But Jensen had shrugged and called it ‘hiding in plain sight’. Which was actually not such a bad idea since most people in a bar did listen with one ear to the music, but were mainly going after their own business all the same.

I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

Jared smiled, recognizing Elton John when it was set right in front of his nose. It would explain why Jensen wore a hideous shirt that evening. Even the pianist himself called it the ‘fugly shirt’. Jared couldn’t agree more. It was midnight blue with painffully bright blodges of color on it probably trying to resemble fireworks, but seeming uncoordinated and simply too neon to look at directly. It had been a Christmas present from Jensen’s sister and Jared hoped that it was a gag. Otherwise the girl was either cruel, or blind.

The next verse made Jared chuckle when Jensen scowled, fully embracing the weird text.

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

At the last word, green eyes leveled onto Jared. Two beers were set in front of the customers the barkeeper was currently serving, but his eyes never stayed away from the singing man across the room for longer than a second. He halted in his bustling for a moment to make sure he didn’t imagine the look but Jensen's eyes stayed on him as his fingers flew over the keys and he started on the chorus.

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

Jared held the meaningful green gaze as he whiped down the counter, trying to look occupied while his head had completely shut down. There was no doubt there. Between Jensen’s last words to him - “this is your song” - and the meaningful looks, he knew that Jensen had conciously added this song to tonight’s set list. For Jared. His song, this was his. For tonight Jensen was his. The knowledge made Jared’s mouth run dry and his heart beat faster. His hands were shaking ever so slightly, but that was fine because it was a good shaking. He was giddy and just a little overwhelmed. Nobody had ever done something like that for him. He doubted anybody ever wood again.

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

A blazing smile showed on Jared’s face and he hated to pull his gaze away as a customer shouted an order at him from the side and he had to ask the man to repeat himself, so he knew what to serve him. It took him double as long as usual since he moved super carefully to stop his giddiness from making him drop a bottle or something similarly stupid.

For the first time he cursed having taken the Silvester shift this year. It was a Thursday just like Christmas had been and Jensen always played on Thursdays. But couldn’t Jared had come as a customer, so he could have enjoyed Jensen’s performance? He shook his head. He would have sat on the bar distracting his colleagues then because Jensen would be on stage most of the time. This way at least he was occupied while the other man pulled his piano man routine.

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Jared listened, smirking at the fact that his eyes were both green and blue and he knew Jensen was aware of that since he had commented on it just the day before.

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

Jared stepped back from the counter for the last chorus, just enjoying Jensen’s smooth voice playing with the vowels in it’s incredibly hot way. When the green eyed man finished with some cool piano accords, Jared was grinning like crazy, holding his gaze steady until Jensen looked away to start the next song, breaking the spell.

Jared bit his lip and remembered what the text had said. God, how much he wanted people to know. After refilling some nuts, he turned to Sophia and tapped her on the shoulder. She flipped her hair over her shoulder with a practiced head move and looked at him. “You know Soph, that was my song”, he beamed at her.

She grinned at him, sighing dramatically. “I noticed. You two are so damn sweet I think I need to make an appointment with my dentist just from watching you”, she answered cheekily before clapping Jared on the shoulder to congratulate him for the good catch he had made and then pushing him back to work now that his song was over.

Jared slaved over the drinks harder than usual, trying to be extra fast and extra friendly, just to make up for his drooling stupor - thankfully the drooling was more metaphorical because the patrons sure as hell would have had a snit if he drooled in any of their drinks. Jensen wrapped up the set at ten minutes to midnight, giving the patrons enough time to pick up their champagne, courtesy of the hotel to every guest with a room, and filing out to get a good look at the fireworks for those who didn’t manage to have a spot at one of the floor to ceiling windows.

Jared handed Jensen a glass of champagne - on the house like all the drinks for the musicians - and grab himself an orange juice. He wouldn’t see much of the fireworks from his spot behind the bar, but his regret was limited when Jensen slipped onto his usual stool making his intentions obvious to stay inside with the working population.

Jared grinned at him, blushing at the memory of the song Jensen had sang at the beginning of his second set. “I never knew you were an Elton John fan.”

Jensen gawked at him playfully, faking absolute horror. “Seriously? That man is my role model. He is the most famous gay man ever to found behind a piano.”

“Didn’t you say that most of those pimped up suit wearing concert musicians swung our way?” Jared asked cheekily.

“Okay, so he is the most famous out and proud gay man behind a piano... and the broad public couldn’t care less about any concert musicians, no matter how mad their skills are.” He gave Jared a wicked grin before demonstratively straightening out his fugly shirt with his hands. “And just so you know, Elton is also my fashion idol.”

Jared couldn’t help laughing out loud. “I think I will never let you go shopping on your own anymore, like EVER.”

“Tell that to my sister.”

“Well, then I’ll never let you dress again without consulting me before.” Jared’s eyes widened when he noticed that this would imply that he would be there when Jensen dressed every morning.

The not so subtle look Jensen gave him showed that the music teacher was fully aware of the implications. “I think I could live with that.”

Jared flushed beet red, swallowing hard and lowering his voice just a little. “Really?”

Jensen tilted his head with a fond smile, picking non-existent debris off Jared’s work shirt to have an excuse to look anywhere but Jared’s face. “Yes. Why do you think I spent nearly every day with you for the last week? I like you.”

Green eyes looked up from beneath soft lashes and Jared felt his heart jump. “I like you too, Jen.”

“You better, Jay! Otherwise this would be kinda ridiculous”, a female voice interrupted from behind Jared’s back.

Jensen defended his honor by throwing some nuts at Lauren before turning back to Jared, rolling his eyes dramatically at Jared’s eavesdropping colleagues. “I’d like us to keep doing this when the holidays are over, Jay.”

God, Jared had never hoped different, but they hadn’t really spoken about the future at all, just enjoying their time together while they were both alone at home during the winter break. Hearing Jensen confirm what Jared had only dared to hope so far was making Jared giddy once more. “Like boyfriends.”

“Yeah, like boyfriends.”

There were loud voices shouting out a countdown synchronously on the street outside before loud cheers mixed with the first explosions of the fireworks. Behind Jensen’s head, Jared could see small flashes from the pyrotechnics but he couldn’t look away from the handsome face before him. Their glasses clinked as Jensen toasted without Jared really participating since he was still too happily mesmerized. That was broken when Jensen put down his glass and pulled Jared down with arms around his neck. Their lips met in something that started out as a chaste New Year’s kiss, but soon became more urgent.

Jared’s arms encircled the other man’s waist firmly and he pulled Jensen closer. Their tongues tangled in a lazy caress for a moment before Jensen pulled back a little, nipping on Jared’s bottom lip before stepping back with one last tangle of his fingers in the curls at the base of Jared’s head.

Jared wanted to follow him, keep their bodies touching but he blushed remembering where they were. His gaze dropped to the floor quickly but Jensen’s warm chuckle made him look back up through his unruly bangs.

“Don’t worry, Jay. All the eyes are on the fireworks right now.”

It was true. No customer really payed them any attention. The few people who had stayed inside were watching through the windows transfixed by the bright lights exploding over the cold night sky.

Jared grinned at Jensen, bringing up his glass of orange juice and toasting the two girls who had left them to coo over each other for the moment before turning back to Jensen raising his glass. “Once again while looking into your eyes.”

“Are they green or blue?” Jensen asked teasing while his gaze held Jared’s as their glasses clinked again. Jared rolled his eyes at Jensen but the other man already moved on in their conversation while creeping close to Jared, so close that their chests touched. “Happy New Year, Jay. Don’t forget to make a wish for this year.”

“Happy New Year, Jen.” He leaned down, brushing their lips oh so softly over each other while whispering only for Jensen to hear: “I already got my wish.”

The END - have a good slide into the new year!
