I stand as living proof to that.
And I'm sure everyone else you met during your vacation can say that you blessed them in some way as well.
Your zig-zag path seems to be what has to happen. I know that as I grow in Christ I tend to change my views on certain things. I also know that I couldn't walk a straight spiritual path if I had arrows leading the way. This results in our zig-zag, dog chasing his tail patterns. It's our sin nature fighting against what we know God has called us to. We walk with Him for a while then get sidetracked with something that looks better for the moment. Then we realize our faults and get back on God's path.
It's all because we're just stupid, wandering sheep. Which is why we need and love our Shepherd.
So...on that note...
Thoughtful? Yes.
Searching for truth? Yes.
Ineffective? Hardly.

Don't worry, I don't think you're paralyzed. Even your stagnancy comes from the desire to do right, and that is a beginning.
