From e-mail correspondence:

I made my first visit to the CCS Museum at Bard College on Sunday. A free day trip. I enjoyed being out in the sun and lying on the grass, as well as having an opportunity to talk at length with the museum's curator and a number of Chelsea art world people that I normally only see in passing. I have heard nothing but good things about the programs. (I assume your friend is in the Bard MFA program as opposed to the MA program to which I would apply.) That said, I wonder about its necessity and its implications for young artworlders.

Yeah MFA programs leave me pretty dubious...I think its largely about earning a pedigree, being groomed and making connections. In an art form where it often seems rather arbitarry as to who makes it and who doesnt, these kinds of institutions provide at least a tenuous framework for a task that evades any kind of commonplace system, that is how to find & endorse new talent. The amount of artists out there is so staggering that at least things like MFAs suggest a degree of validation and commitment thats otfen easy to fake. Of course, you can just skip that and make friends w/ the whole art scene (see Ry Ry McGinley) and good shit can happen that way as well.

as i lack a knowledge of art, including the art world, my comments are really unimportant. however, i wanted to write this:

you don't need an MA to fall into art curation, even at the museum level? and what is the difference between, say, an art museum and art gallery in regards to curatorial positions and the like?

gee - i don't even know if those questions are relevant but whatever. i'm curious in information regarding art curation, mostly because i am curious into how it compares to history curation. make sense?
