When in Paris, look for Berthillon ice cream. It's in a tiny shop on the Ile St. Louis, which is the smaller of the two islands in the Seine. I'm not a big dessert person, but their ice cream is and is supposed to be the best in the world

Hey, thanks. Your suggestions both reaffirm decisions I had made and introduce me to new ideas. I especially appreciate the names of the neighborhoods most worth visiting. I really want a local host everywhere I go so I can say things like "where can I find ____?" and get a specific answer. E-mail when you can; no rush. Thanks again.
I remember that Nylon issue. I laughed at it at the time, but maybe I ought to try and find a copy in the box under my bed or at a friend's house.
I purchased my tickets for $630 roundtrip (JFK to Heathrow). I don't know how that compares to other times of year, but people seem to think it is not a bad deal.
venice is pretty straightforward.. you can walk everywhere and the niceness of it is just in walking around, looking at everything. you're going during high tourist season so pretty much everyone you see there will be a tourist

p.s. for food in paris, check out a restaurant called 'piccolo teatro' in the marais area. delicious veg food! also, check out the eiffel tower at night.. it glows once per hour or so (they turn on all these little lights and it makes it look like the tower is sparkling!). the tower is both hideous and somehow beautiful at the same time..
oh one last thing.. i don't know if you drink or not but in london, don't forget to visit a pub! a lot of them have some veg food there now so you can go and have some pub grub and a pint of ale or cider. if you don't drink, go anyway and get a non-alcoholic drink. i loved the pubs. beware though as they are very smokey (something i got used to but wasn't used to when i paid a recent visit since toronto bars are pretty 'smoke-free' in comparison). also, if you are anywhere you can cook, go to a supermarket and buy a package of linda mccartney breakfast sausages! they are soooooo good and we don't have them here (at least not in canada). they are very 'meaty' though so if you don't like very realistic tasting things, beware.. but if you ever occasionally get a hankering for something very 'meaty', they are the ones to try!
