Soooo if you're into fashion, into human rights, or into both, check out the letter behind the cut. It's written by my brother's girlfriend, Haley...who is working with Free The Children on a fashion show.
If you're interested, reply and I'll pass your message onto Haley, or you can email her for more info.

Hey everyone!

Some of you I know, some of you I only know of, but I’m pretty sure I know this: all of you are interested in fashion or theater production. For those of you from Forest Hill Collegiate, I’ve heard that your annual fashion show was cancelled; for everyone else, this is a chance to participate in a (hopefully) extremely excellent event.

If you’ve never heard of Free the Children, check out www.freethechildren.com. They are an incredible organization that provides health care, alternative income, and education to countries like Sierra Leone and Kenya. The founder, Craig Kielburger, was only 12 years old when he learned about child slave labour and decided to make a difference.

Two friends of my sisters had this idea, and I think it’s great: why not put on a fashion show dedicated to raising awareness about slave labour? And, to take it one step further, why not have all the clothes be original designs by teenagers interested in making a difference?

I know we’re all young, but I think it’s important to show that teenagers are not oblivious to what is going on in the world. Even if you’re not super political, it’ll be a really good time.

The basic idea is that every designer will commit to making at least two pieces by the end of April/beginning of May. If you’re too busy with school, setting aside even 2 hours a week should have you done in no time at all; or, if you want to make more, that would be awesome.

Since this is a charity nonprofit event, I cannot pay for anyone’s fabric; also, since this is an event to raise awareness against slave labour, please research all the fabrics you are using to make sure they’re okay. If you plan on silkscreening tee shirts, please use American Apparel (if necessary, I may be able to get you wholesale prices, thanks to M. “Danger” Reis.) or a similar brand.

The pieces will be shown in different ‘scenes’, each with an individual theme and a song to match. To give you an example:
Body Image - Kanye West, “The New Workout Plan”
Poverty - M.I.A., “10 Dollar”
Wealth - Handsome Boy Modeling School, “Class System”
And so on…right now, everything is flexible so if you have an idea for a theme, song, whatever you can definitely let me know.

If you’re not into designing, we also need models, dancers, choreographers, as well as stage crew, publicity, website design and money. Feel free to pass this email along to anyone who you think would be interested.

The show will probably be the first week of June…right now the location is up in the air, but it should be finalized by the end of the month.

My cell number is (416) 885-4579…call anytime to leave a message if you’re interested. Or email me back at haley.mlotek@utoronto.ca

Thanks!
