What is currently considered "science" is only science of the material-mechanical world. It studies substance, not essence. Quantity, but not quality. This is fine so long as the former does not encroach upon the latter, which has indeed happened in modern times. Formerly, science was a monistic doctrine, focused on explaining the deeper workings of life and the cosmos as well as man's relation to them. The material-mechanistic part of this was purely peripheral. Today, all focus has been shifted to the outer, while the inner has been neglected: the inner in man, the inner in nature.

So even on this vague sentimental level, modern science does destroy the "mystery" and "inner beauty" that was once felt.

It's no coincidence that the ancient Greeks said that all knowledge begins in wonder.
