Do something for me

Please could anyone reading this recommend a good book - I'll be spending a lot of time travelling this week. I have bought a copy of Lovely Bones, but I'm a fast reader and will finish that in a couple hours.

Also, I'm bored at the mo, any entertaining (work-safe) sites I can read?

Thanks. :)

More authors than books... ex_stephmog743 August 4 2004, 10:49:38 UTC
I take it you've read all the Stephen Fry novels? and everything by Douglas Adams? And Good Omens? They're my old standards that I would recommend to anyone. Failing that you could try one of Jeremey Paxman's newish offerings - I just finished The English a while back and really enjoyed it.

Oh, and I know you love Dave Gorman as much as I do, have you read all his books too?

oh yeah - got signed copies of his books! I used to be web editor for www.blackwell.co.uk, and I used to be in touch with Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace for interviews for the site - best part of the job. Have you read Join Me by Danny? I'm number 10 Joinee. :)

I loved American Gods. It's not at all like Good Omens. You should read it. Really. Other good books?

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon
The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler
All of the Harry Potter books.
All of the Artemis Fowl Books.

That is all.

Loved the Curious Incident book, and have read the Harry Potter. I'll give Artemis Fowl a shot though. Have you read any Phillip Pullman books? I think you'd like them.

Nope. But now I'll have to check them out. Is he the author?

He wrote the Dark Materials Trilogy - it's fantastic reading, and he's won a few book awards for it.

Umberto Eco, Name of the Rose and Focaults Pendulum.

You like reading Fantasy?
Barbara Hamblys books are pretty good, slowly working my way through Dragonsbane now.
Terry Pratchett is also a good writer, with his Discworld.
Robert Jordans Wheel of Time is my fave fantasy books, but they are agonizingly slow at times.
Try George RR Martin if you want a bit more mature fantasy.

I love Fantasy, got into the Terry Goodkind stuff a while ago, but by the time his new books came out, I'd forgotten what had happened in the previous one! Love Garth Nix Sabriel series though. Used to like Terry Pratchett, but he just irritates me now, so I avoid him. I'll keep an eye out for Barbara Hamblys though. I've heard good things about Stephen King's Dark Tower books though.

If you're a fan of sci-fi, the books from "Enders Saga" by Orson Scot Card are riveting. The first book is "Ender's Game". There's also a parallel series called "Ender's Shadow" which is similarly riveting.

Stephen King does awesome non-horror fiction: The Dark Tower series for example (first book is "The Gunslinger" - that's my least favourite in the series). Different Seasons inspired 3 movies plus one other season - one of the movies was The Shawshank Redemption. His Richard Bachman books are pretty good thrillers - my favourite of those is "The Long Walk" - I hope it becomes a film one day...
