I use milk crates for shelving units. I'm a fan of things that become useful when packing, and they work very well. An actual bookcase seems a bit silly to me, as most rooms usually have at least one bookcase or shelf.

I was going to suggest milk crates as well.
They're very versatile. They can be shelves, drawers, chairs, tables, just about anything. If you don't like the colors (because milk crates usually come in drab brown and black or blue) then just buy a can of spray paint for color.
And they are totally excellent for packing and transport.

i bought a few things at target . one is a three drawer plastic thing. they have multiple colors in this. if you want i can take a picture of mine to show you how i personalized it to fit me better. i also bought a cloth box-ish thing there to keep things in ( ... )

I wouldn't bring too much at first to be on the safe side. Just bring the essentials (there's lists online of items to bring to dorms). For decorating; IKEA has these wall stickers that are pretty cool.
