I think hierarchy does matter upto certain extent. But it does so when its more subjective. Someone rightly said, Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
hmm, interesting question. i remember reading something about a study they did, where they found that if you were good looking, you were more likely to be given a job. and from a journalism perspective, women newsreaders on the tv are usually more likely to be given a job if they are young and attractive. as they start looking older, they are replaced by young, attractive people. that's pretty depressing, really.
I read about the study too. Looks could be an important factor for initial impact. But in the long way, action is the one that counts. When you are interacting constantly, you should be presentable.

I know that my own hierarchy is fluid, however. Knowing more about a place/person/thing will boost it up the hierarchy.
