Well I was going to make a quick update and let everyone know I'm still alive and that life is simply amazing, then I read Becca's live journal and found out Terry Shiavo died. I could write down everything I'm feeling and how angry I am with how confused society has really become, but all I am going to say is pray for her soul and also for Michael ( Read more... )

What happened today is something that happens in many families, including my own. I saw my grandpa pulled off of life support, because it was his decision to make.

Be glad you're not the one pullin gthe plug.

alberto, i'm behind you all the way on this one.
her will may not have been known, but in a case of uncertainty, letting someone have the *sarcastic sneer* right to die is NOT equal to letting someone have the right to live.
society sickens me. and bush calls himself pro-life, right? did he do anything? did anyone in government?

Bush did everything in his power to save Terri's life. He flew immediately back to Washington to sign an emergancy law that would have enabled the Shindlers to put the feeding tube back in Terri. The Republicans in the House also held an emergancy meeting that lasted all night until after midnight so that they could vote to pass the emergancy law.

So yes, a lot of people in the government did everything in their power to help. Unfortunetely many politicans didn't feel the need to save the life of an annocent human being.

I would say Bush's emergency meeting was great, but what they got accomplish was an act of cowardice, they should have at that point taken control of the case and pass a few laws to directly interfere with the case instead of just wasting time to pass a bill that sent it back to the courts. They wanted to appear to be stadning up for what they beleived in, but to say they did everything in their power is by far an understatment. I just hope they do more now in the aftermath.

Did she want to die? I would have pulled the plug on her if she agreed. I don't know if she was able to communicate. I've talked w/ some local priests and pulling the plug didn't bother them , the church says if u have to use extraordinary means to keep somebody alive w/ hopes of them returning to quality of life then u can pull the plug. Feeding tube is extraordinary and for so long indicates she wouldn't return to quality of life.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, extraordinary means are distinguished "by studying the type of treatment to be used, its degree of complexity or risk, its cost and the possibilites of using it, and comparing these elements with the result that can be expected, taking into account the state of the sick person and his or her physical and moral resources ( ... )

Tregg I am slightly disappoint with your logic. Even if she would have granted Michael the right to remove the tube (which I have many arguments to show that its not the case) it still would have been assisted suicide. The feeding tube was "extraoridanry" means for keeping her alive. It was in fact assisting in her critical condition which many experts beleive could have been improved, though no steps were ever taken for rehab. You should definately read the section of the Catechism regarding what are in fact extraordinary means, but basic water and nutrient can never be considered as such. Also what priest said such horrid things. What they are saying is in direct contradiction with what the magesterium teaches and even what the have said in letters after her death.

21 DIFFERENT court cases proved that she had told more than just her husband about her wishes to not remain in a vegatative state. There were many witnesses, and this case has already been settled in the court of law. Many times. If this was her wishes, then they should be respected. I should hope someone would respect my wishes as well.
