The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
(Now that I've read this, my brother declared that every boy who once played "Magic" will now be fascinated by me and therefore discover I am their true one. Please don't let it get out that I've read this book!! =0 !!)
“Hey, this is terrific!” he said. “Someone down there is trying to kill us!”
“Terrific,” said Arthur.
“But don’t you see what this means?”
“Yes. We’re going to die.”
“Yes, but apart from that.”
“Apart from that?”
“It means we must be on to something!”
“How soon can we get off it?” -113
“Life,” said Marvin dolefully, “loathe it or ignore it, you can’t like it.” -127
"Hey, come on, wake up."
"Just let me stick to what I'm good at, yeah?" muttered Zaphod, and rolled away from the voice back to sleep.
"Do you want me to kick you?" said Ford.
"Would it give you a lot of pleasure?" said Zaphod, blearily.
"No."
"Nor me. So what's the point? Stop bugging me." -165
"What does it matter? Science has achieved some wonderful things, of course, but I'd rather be happy than right any day."
"And are you?"
"No. That's where it all falls down, of course."
"Pity," said Arthur with sympathy. "It sounded like quite a good life-style otherwise." -172
"Simple. I got very bored and depressed, so I went and plugged myself in to its external computer feed (this is a computer talking, mind you). I talked to the computer at great length and explained my view of the Universe to it," said Marvin.
"And what happened?" pressed Ford.
"It committed suicide," said Marvin, and stalked off back to the Heart of Gold. -192
