Awesome! I loved this so much! What a great concept for an AU and I really liked the tie-ins to the series. Loved the nods to 'Scarecrow' and 'A Very Supernatural Christmas' and the others you threw in. It's one of my favourite things about these 'butterfly effect' type fics, there's so much that's still canon, but with a twist.
Sam as an FBI agent was completely believable (and awesome). The progression from lawyer to FBI agent was very well thought out and quite logical. I think that's what surprised me the most. I read that paragraph about the laywer being able to get a plea bargin at the most and law enforcement being able to actually solve the crime and I remember thinking - 'oh, that is so Sam. No wonder he joined the FBI
( ... )
This review made all the headaches worth it, so thank you.
I'm glad Sam's voice and reasoning worked, and that it was believable. Part of this came from a rewatching of "Wishful Thinking", where Sam told Dean being a lawyer wasn't what he'd wish for anymore. It made me think that, given his nature and background, Sam wouldn't have really enjoyed practicing law that much. I've worked in law offices, and Sam wouldn't fit into that mindset. He's too proactive.
Funny you mention the level of detail. On editing, the main thing I worked on was taking some of the detail and exposition out, because I am a geek who overshares. Of course, that was part of the draw to this story, being able to explain things they never do in the show. This is where I'm a lot like Sam - I want to know.
Dean always breaks my heart. That's why I had to give him a hopeful ending.
I actually love the concept with Hendrickson working with Sam as a FBI agent because last year there was a BB that had Dean as the FBI agent working with Hendrickson so it was very cool to read about Sam's FBI adventures this year!
Thanks! There was something about Henriksen that made it such a cool idea. In any other show, he'd be one of the good guys, and it's fun to play with that idea in fic. I read that one last year. Dean was an ATF agent investigating strange house fires. Very good story.
Ok, this is not meant as a criticism, ok? Cuz I loved the premise and I loved the details you put in. The storytelling was magnificent...
But please take it as a compliment when I say that so many times I stopped reading and said out loud "I want to kick Sam's ass" or "I'm beginning to seriously hate Sam" or variations thereof.
Your writing drew me in so much I was really reacting to what was happening. And not just reacting internally with bitching in my head. No, I was really actively reacting to what was going on. I think if Sam were in front of me I would have wanted to strangle him. Your writing was just so well done in that way.
Hehe.
Anyway, enough with the violence. I love the re-imagining and how in the end Sam manned up and took a good look at himself too and decided that being with Dean is where he wants to be. This universe can totally be what happened if Sam really cut himself off from his family. I think his voice was spot on. Brava! :-)
Oh, I take that as a compliment! Because there were several times while writing this that I wanted to kick Sam's ass. That's part of the reason I had Dean punch him when they finally met up.
Glad this worked for you, and thanks so much for reading!
Whew, I am glad. Cuz lemme tell you, that first chapter, a couple of paragraphs in when I realized that Sam was an FBI agent covering some person's back bringing down human monsters... I was nearly incensed.
I was talking at the fic (again, out loud) and saying something like: You would deny your brother then turn around and do the exact same thing except you're protecting other people except your family!
Your explanation later on made a lot of sense... but lemme tell you, I was ready to clobber Sam as early as that. I mean he broke my heart saying no to Dean when he asked for help but I just got really pissed when I found out what he was up to after.
Anyhooo-- so yeah I might've made a little fistpump myself when Dean clocked Sam. Hehe.
