A Note About Claims

Dec 28, 2012 23:42

Lately, we've seen some more creativity with claims (or, at least, attempted claims), and while we love to see the topics we inspire, we'd like to lay down a few guidelines about what you may and may not do at this comm.  There are two main issues we're seeing, and a great way to tell if your claim is a good one to request is by asking yourself a couple of questions.

1. If my claim is not a specific fandom, is it a specific theme?
Things like favorite characters, female characters, non-human characters, etc. are good examples of thematic claims.  Your theme may reflect the round topic (for example, first crushes or main characters of childhood shows for our nostalgia round).
Things like 'all the movies I saw this month' that have a bit looser connections (and motivations) may still be considered too wide.  So you should ask....

2. Is my claim about the size of one fandom?
It would be pretty unfair of us to allow thematic claims that encompassed 20 different characters so people could essentially have a multifandom batch for each round, so your themed claims must provide you with about the same amount of source material as one fandom would.
This means from 4-7 main characters, 3-4 seasons of TV, or 2-3 movies, all, of course, with your thematic connection.
We do allow crossovers which are, by default, two fandoms, but at least 15 of your icons must display both fandoms if you choose to do a crossover.

Claims that meet these criteria:
- Female characters from [any two shows]
- New!Whedon TV: Firefly (14 episodes) + Dollhouse (26 episodes)
- Three Christopher Nolan Films: Memento, Insomnia, and The Prestige
- Crossover: Doctor Who/Sherlock (BBC)

Claims that do not meet these criteria:
- Hotties from Teen Wolf, Supernatural, and Merlin (depending on your taste, that is basically the entire cast of three shows)
- Les Miserables & Prometheus (not really a themed claim, unless you have an elaborate explanation for me)
- Ten favorite villains (nice theme, but ten is too many main characters!)
- Crossover: Supernatural/Sherlock (BBC)/Doctor Who/The Avengers/The Hobbit (...let's see if you can spot the problem here)

Thanks, and happy claiming!
