Character: Mia Fey
Series/Fandom: Gyutaken Saiban
Version: Original

Age: 27
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Sexuality: Straight

Appearance: At 5'5" and with a well-developed body, Mia is often given unwanted attention by men for her appearances (much to her embarrassment in her second case in court). She does not flaunt herself, however, and is modest with her looks, likely because of her upbringing in the secluded Kurain village.

While she would have worn spirit medium attire back home, Mia's Los Angeles fare is a bit more professional. She wears a standard coat and skirt, with one of her favorite scarves and a magatama for spiritual protection, and a reminder of her heritage.

Personality: Calm and collected, Mia Fey is definitely a force to be reckoned with, inside or outside the courtroom. As a lawyer, she is highly driven and motivated to uncover lies and cover-ups. She also makes sure that justice is given to all, especially in a court system where some trials can be unfair and some attorneys can be dishonest. She is able to tell when people are lying, and ties together facts quickly to reveal the truth. She does not care about perfect wins, the way some attorneys do: if her client is guilty, then she will be able to do what she can to prove they are.

Outside of the courtroom, Mia is fiercely devoted to people she cares for. This means that she can often be a little overbearing when it comes down to what happened to them. She often checks up on them, and wants to know what they've been up to since they last talked. She likes knowing about things from their past, like stories or memories. She is also very protective, and because of this, will sometimes keep the truth from people that she knows. Despite this, however, Mia is a very loving sister, colleague, and friend.

Abilities/Strengths: As a female member of the Fey family, Mia is able to channel and communicate with the spirits of the dead. Mia also has some background in investigative work, as defense attorneys often search crime scenes to find evidence to use in their trials. Her primary skill, however, is her knowledge of the law: she is a well-known defense attorney who uses contradictions in testimonies to prove the guilty as criminals and defendants as innocent.

Weaknesses: Because of her independence, Mia tends to take on too many things by herself, which results in her getting into things way over her head. While she often came out of these incidents alive, this weakness ultimately led to her death. She also tends to have a bit of a problem with names of people she first meets, though she gets the hang of it after a while. In addition, she is unable to rest while guilty criminals walk free, and does what she can to prove their guilt: a trait that is admirable, but also dangerous.

History: As the eldest daughter of the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, Misty Fey, Mia stood to one day become the successor to her mother's title.

The Kurain Channeling Technique is a process by which spirits of the dead can be channeled through the summoner's body. The summoner will take on the appearance of the spirit summoned, but would still retain their own body, with some changes.

(In order to fully illustrate this, a demonstration is shown here. In this demo, Maya is summoning her sister, Mia. When Mia is in Maya's body, Maya looks like this. Mia's consciousness is the one expressed to the outside world. When Mia's spirit leaves Maya's body, Maya returns to her normal self.)

Only women born into the Fey family possess this ability, and are trained in the technique at a very young age. This has led not only to strain in marriages between Feys and their spouses, but also has caused a lot of strife between sisters aiming to be Kurain Masters. Tradition holds that the eldest daughter is chosen to be Master. This may not only be due to age, but stronger spiritual power as well. However, in some cases, the younger sister's power can overshadow her elder sister's, and the younger sister is chosen to be Master instead.

This happened between Misty, Mia's mother, and Morgan, Mia's aunt. Morgan was senior to Misty, and was absolutely aghast to discover that Misty's power overshadowed her own. Because of this, Mia grew up in an environment where strained relationships between family members was all too common. But that was not the only problem that plagued her family.

One day, Misty Fey was called upon to use her channeling powers to help solve the DL-6 murder case. The police had next to no leads, and they were desperate to wrap the case up. They decided to summon the victim to get the name of the murderer from them. But when the spirit she channeled convicted an innocent man, word leaked that the police had been desperate enough to use a spirit medium for their cases. Both the Kurain technique and the Fey family fell out of favor. Misty then suddenly disappeared, and no one was able to find her.

Determined to discover the truth about her mother, and to escape the succession war in her village, Mia left Kurain Mountain and went to Los Angeles, California, where she attended law school to become a defense attorney. It was here that she met Marvin Grossberg, the man who eventually became her employer. From him, she learned the techniques that she eventually used in court: using evidence and hard facts to discover contradictions in witness testimonies, thereby proving the innocence of her defendants. In Grossberg's office, she also met her co-worker, Diego Armando, a smug, teasing coffee addict who eventually became her boyfriend.

Six months into her relationship with Diego, he was poisoned by Dahlia Hawthorne in the Los Angeles courthouse. Diego had been investigating Dahlia's involvement in an earlier case involving the murder of her stepsister, Valerie. Diego was presumed dead, since the poison Dahlia selected was one of the deadlier ones available. Dahlia was involved in the murder of her ex-boyfriend shortly afterwards, and Mia was able to prove Dahlia guilty of her multiple crimes in court. Dahlia then received the death penalty, and while Mia was relieved that her boyfriend's attacker was finally imprisoned, this news was dismaying to Dahlia's then-boyfriend, Phoenix Wright.

Later in her career, Mia left Marvin Grossberg's office and started her own law firm, Fey Law Offices & Company. This was mostly due to the fact that she wanted to discover the truth about her mother, and having her own law office would give her further assets to help her. After he decided to make law his calling, Phoenix Wright became her first employee.

Mia then discovered that Redd White, the owner of a information company called Bluecorp, was the man who disowned Mia's mother to the press after the DL-6 incident. Once Mia discovered that Bluecorp was nothing more than a large company set up on blackmail, White disposed of her in her own office. He then framed Mia's sister, Maya, for her death. Phoenix was able to prove Maya's innocence and Redd's guilt, and the truth about Bluecorp was revealed to the world.

However, Phoenix still chats with Mia, even if she is not in his world anymore. Throughout Phoenix's other cases, either Maya or her cousin, Pearl, will summon Mia if she is needed to help Phoenix with his current case. She has often sat through many trials post-mortem, though she is rarely recognized, even by people who she used to work with.

Sample RP: She knows that she's in over her head.

Even when she was younger, she was always like this. "My little Mia," her mother would say, soft laugh lines around her mouth, "you try too hard. You can't expect to fix the whole world by yourself."

"But this is different," she would reply, and that reason always stood with her after all this time.

Now there is no mother around to say that to, but if anyone else asked her, she knew it would be a good enough reason.

She isn't just fighting this horrible man with the equally horrible smile for her mother's memory, for her own honor.

Even Marvin Grossberg, the man who had helped her get to where she was today, is stuck in Redd White's web, cornered on the same information she's trying to uncover.

It's quite the tangle, stretching across law offices and detective cubicles, all because some man thinks he can make his own rules and load his own dice and run his own world.

Law schools have a word for men like him.

Criminal.

Nobody else would act, and Mia knows this. If they would act, their time had come, and they had stood silently, too afraid to do anything.

She hasn't told a soul about it, of course. If she does, they are certain to tell her that she, too, needs to hide, needs to stop being brave and hang her head low if she wants to keep breathing.

Her last night is tonight. The note and the creaking door behind her said as much, and for a liar, Redd White was good at keeping his word.

The conversation is short, simple.

"I need to ask you for one more thing, Miss Fey," White growls, jewelry menacing in the moonlight. "Your eternal silence."

She thinks of the people she will be leaving behind.

Diego, the man she loves, still asleep and unaware of the world around him.

Maya, her sister, bright-eyed and hopeful.

Phoenix, her employee, with more potential than even she knew.

I'm sorry, she thinks. I didn't want any of you involved.

It looks like you'll need to finish this for me.

Something hard hits her.

The world goes black.
