I've been diabetic for 14 years, and on a pump for nine years.  I've accepted having diabetes - it's part of my life ( Read more... )

I've never used the pump. Do you achieve that much better control with it than taking shots?

I've never used Lantus or the newer long-acting insulin because they didn't come out till after I started the pump. I know that NPH was awful for control and living any kind of normal life. I'm not saying that MDI is bad for control, just that it would be for me, now after so long on the pump. Especially if it was just a few days here and there, not longer term. And I don't plan to get rid of the pump, I'm just frustrated.

It's like night and day for me. My levels are so much better with the pump!

When I have that day of "Oh My God - no more pump today!" I disconnect and inject every two hours for my basal, and bolus as normal. Control is a little wonky, but not too bad.

I feel your pain.

That's a good idea. I might try that too. Thanks - every once in awhile I get the same "omg - nothing attached to me today OK????" urge.

I completely understand the "get this thing off of me feeling". In fact, its why I ended up going back to MDI. I had a constant basal rate with the pump, and never really saw much better control than when I was on Lantus pre-pump. To me, the ability to touch my own skin without resistance, and to not get caught up in the tubing was completely worth it. But I agree with what kindletheflame said earlier that it really depends on your own needs whether the pump or shots work better for you.

Yeah, I've had a pump for almost 13 years now and it's both a lifesaver and an "Oh my god, stop it. Just get off."

As much as I love being a robot most of the time, there are the downsides. Sex is embarrassing. Exercise is hard when you start to sweat. I'm on a roller derby team, and three-hour, sweaty practices keep me from taking it off, but make keeping it on difficult. Blah.

My control is infinitely better with a pump (and even better when combining pump/lantus, but I'm too bad about taking the shot at the same time every day to keep that up) so I'll be sticking with it. There are those times though, when I just want to feel more normal.

lol I feel that way about once a week. usually around the time I need to change my site.

I HATE mdi's... my control is far worse on those then on my pump.

But when I catch the tubing on a drawer in the kitchen (DAMNIT!) or roll over in my sleep and it gets under my broken rib... (it's healing but fuck it hurts when I do that)

I want to toss it out the window. I know how much better off I am but dude. seriously. HATE IT some days. (I do love it other days though. when I can snack randomly and just push the buttons a couple times instead of injecting. and I love that I have LESS bruises.)
