Beating The Odds; Minho/Key

“Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more.”
― Erica Jong

Author's Note: Written for this request "Do you think you could write a minkey fanfic in which Key is from a well to do family but Minho isn't, and how they stay strong in their relationship despite the odds against them? Mostly from Minho's pov..?". Happy two years of writing in the shinee world to me! ^^;;;

Choi Minho couldn't seem to decide if he liked the first time he met Kim Kibum. He was a waiter and Kibum was his customer and well, the circumstances under which they met could really have been so much better (like sharing a same class in college, getting introduced to each other by a common friend or hooking up at a club) but it seems like fate wasn't going to have it any other way. Minho felt like it was a straight up slap to his face, the universe's way to remind him of the reality that there was a blatant difference in their social class and family background.

When the Choi’s business had failed and his parents became heavily in debt, Minho had to support himself through college by juggling two part time jobs while coping with his studies. He knew his only way out was to graduate with a degree so he could get a job that would secure him a proper income for his life to change. If Minho wasn't in college trying his best not to fail any one of his classes, he was either serving at Harmonium, a restaurant opened by a Michelin star chef, or working as an assistant coach at a soccer academy for kids. Obviously, Minho's social life was almost non-existent. Besides showing respect to the important people in both his school and work life, he barely had the time to get to know people since he was always rushing between places, only ever able to come to a rest when he was safely home. Still, those few hours of rest were evidently not enough.

Constantly feeling as if he never got enough sleep, Minho couldn't be bothered to make an effort to remember faces that he knew wasn’t going to be influential in his life. So it came to an absolute shock to him when a sleek black Mercedes-Benz had pulled up at the bus stop where he had been waiting for the bus that would bring him to his workplace. When the window rolled down to reveal a boy with light golden blonde hair saying a friendly hello, Minho even had to look around his surroundings first to check if the boy was talking to him.

The moment he realised everyone at the bus stop was looking between the boy and him, Minho had never felt so puzzled in his entire life. It didn't help that the boy simply opened the car door and offered him a ride to his workplace, quickly scooting further inside to give Minho the space to sit beside him. Desperate to escape the curious stares from the onlookers, Minho found himself getting into the car (well, the boy did know where he worked so he couldn’t be an absolute stranger) and a few seconds later, forced to make friends with Kim Kibum.

What Minho didn't expect was for this one-time thing to become a weekly occurrence because Kibum, who so happened to be in the same college as him, insisted on giving him the free ride to the restaurant every week. Call him a freeloader but Minho really couldn't turn down the opportunity to relax in a luxurious car for at least twenty minutes weekly. What's more, with Kibum (or to be accurate, his driver) sending him to his workplace, Minho was able to take an additional 30 minutes breather since the car ride cut his traveling time to work by half. Though eventually, he spent not only the car ride but also the free time after with Kibum (he was almost like a leech, Minho couldn’t shake him off). It would come as no surprise then that Minho ended up knowing more about Kibum than he wanted to. And ten car rides later, Kibum made a move on him, one that Minho realised he didn't detest. Needless to say, on their eleventh car ride, they were officially together, the atmosphere surrounding them had changed and the distance between them sitting beside each other in the car almost non-existent.

Minho should have known Kibum had an ulterior motive for being so nice. It turned out that the blonde had been interested in him from the time he heard Minho ask if he could get them (he had been dining with his family) any drinks. Kibum had later admitted that he had been tempted to reply no because what he wanted wasn't drinks but Minho's phone number, of which he eventually secured when he made the effort to get whatever information he could about the waiter he was attracted to from the overly helpful restaurant manager. Kibum also revealed how he thought they were meant to be together since he had coincidentally spotted Minho at the bus stop that fateful day and didn't have to battle with himself everyday over the decision to do something with Minho's phone number anymore. Minho had laughed so heartily at how cute Kibum was and realised that he was falling even more in love with his boyfriend day after day.

His relationship with Kibum had changed from friends to lovers but everything else stayed the same and life still went on the way it always did for Minho. It was terribly difficult for him to find time to date Kibum, most of the times it was the blonde coming over to Minho's house to spend time with him after work (frequently sleeping over in Minho’s single bed and going to college the next morning together), and that alone was the reason behind almost all of the arguments they had. It was fine at first, because both Minho and Kibum were still getting to know each other better, somewhat in a trial stage of their relationship. However, as the days passed and their feelings for each other grew deeper and stronger, they both wanted more. But Minho couldn't give; and Kibum was tired of feeling like he was the only one who was trying in their relationship. That was when they hit a rough patch in their relationship.

Minho couldn't blame Kibum though. It was his fault; his circumstances didn't allow him to be the best boyfriend he could be to Kibum who deserved so much more. However, as much as the guilt was eating him alive bit by bit, Minho chose to be selfish and didn’t want to let Kibum go. Through it all, Kibum had been thoughtful, always the person accommodating and giving in, but Minho knew there was a limit for even the most understanding person on earth. On many occasions, Kibum offered to help Minho with his school fees so he could quit one of his jobs but that just always ended on a bad note. Yet even with all the cold wars and arguments they had and how, at times, it felt like the relationship wasn’t working for the both of them, there was never any mention of breaking up because love was indeed a powerful thing, so powerful that neither of them could imagine life without the other.

It was this very fact that led Kibum to decide he wanted Minho to meet his parents. Even though they had gone through so much in almost a year of being together, Minho found that this was one challenge he had absolutely no guts to take on.

“Your parents will hate me.” Minho said for the nth time that day, this time round, they were in Kibum’s car on the way to his parents’ house (Kibum had his own apartment, which was nearer to their college, to live in for the sake of convenience) to finally meet, well, Kibum’s parents.

“No, they won't.” With his eyes on the road, Kibum sighed as he concentrated on his driving while repeating the same answer over again, “They know about you, Minho, the driver talks but they didn't say anything for a whole year. I really think it'll be fine.”

“Kibum, I really don't think this is a good idea.”

“Are you never going to meet my parents then?”

“If it's possible, yes.”

“Even when we're planning to get married?”

Minho fell silent but Kibum knew what his boyfriend was thinking.

“Minho, they're my parents!”

“They won't let you be with me.”

“And why not?”

“Because I can't provide you with all that you deserve!”

“Excuse me, I can provide for myself.” Kibum was offended.

“I know you can, bummie, but I can’t live with myself knowing that you have to suffer with me. My financial situation isn't any better than how it was when you got to know me. My family, we’re still trying to clear our debts and-”

Kibum risked a look at Minho just so he could shoot his boyfriend a death glare, “Have I ever cared about that?”

Minho shook his head but muttered, “Your parents will.”

“My parents aren't snobbish-”

“That's not what I mean, Kibum.” Minho sighed as he looked at his boyfriend, “Okay. Listen. Imagine our daughter in the future bringing home someone she loves who we find out doesn't come from a decent family background, would you still feel assured letting her spend the rest of her life with that person?”

Kibum remained silent.

“Exactly.” Minho concluded, “That’s what I thought.”

“Hey wait! I didn't say anything because my answer was no, it's not by the way, I was silent because...” A smile tugged on the corners of Kibum’s lips as he smoothly brought the car to a stop and glanced to his side, “Minho, I didn't know you wanted a kid with me... and a daughter for that matter.”

Minho raised an eyebrow as he met Kibum’s eyes, “Weren’t you the one who wanted a kid?”

“Yes, but that doesn’t mean we need to have one because I want one.”

“Well, I umm…. Hey, why’d you stop driving?”

It was only when Minho turned to look elsewhere to avoid eye contact with Kibum that he realised they weren’t moving any more.

“We’re here.” Kibum turned off the engine with a knowing smile and said, “You can’t escape anymore, Choi Minho.”

“Oh god, Kibum, your parents will hate me.” Minho sunk into the passenger’s seat.

Kibum rolled his eyes, “Stop whining and get your ass out of the car before we end up late and give my parents a reason to hate you.”

Minho groaned but did what he was told. And in the next minute, he was holding Kibum’s hand, letting his boyfriend lead the way, and walking towards what he felt was his doom.

*

“So you’re the reason why I see less of my son every day.”

With one sentence, Minho felt a wave of guilt wash over him and he shifted uncomfortably on the couch, suddenly feeling even smaller than he did when Kibum first introduced him to his parents. They were now sitting in the living room that was bigger than the whole of Minho’s house, having a not so casual chit chat while waiting for dinner to be served.

Kibum instantly squeezed Minho’s hand that he hadn’t let go since they left the car and said, “Appa’s just joking, don’t mind him.”

“I’m not.” His father interjected with all seriousness before Minho could even turn his head towards Kibum and smile reassuringly.

“Appa!” Kibum groaned and looked at his mother for help, “Umma…”

Mrs Kim simply smiled and changed the topic, “So! Minho... forgive me if I’m wrong but have I met you before? You look awfully familiar…”

Minho immediately tensed up but decided to go for the truth. He was never one to be ashamed of whom he was.

And so, Minho nodded and smiled politely as he answered, “We have, eomonim. It was when Kibum and I met for the first time too.”

“Oh?” Kibum’s mother questioned with interest, “And when was that?”

“At Harmonium, the restaurant.” Minho replied as confidently as he could, “I work there part time.”

It was obvious Mrs Kim couldn’t seem to remember him serving them when she probed with a frown, “If you were working, how did Kibum and you meet?”

Kibum decided to answer for Minho as he skipped the details and said what was important, “Actually, umma, I approached Minho and we started to get to know each other and well, you know, we’re here now.”

Kibum’s parents nodded and remained silent but Minho could feel that things weren’t going to end up well at all. Somehow, he knew he was being judged by Kibum’s parents, rather unfairly for that matter, but he was in no position to feel unhappy or hurt because this concerned Kibum, their only son, their only child. Putting himself in their shoes, Minho would also want the best for his kid, the assurance that his kid was going to live well for the rest of his/her life even after he passed away. This was exactly why Minho felt defeated right from the start. If he couldn’t get past himself, how could he earn the trust he needed from Kibum’s parents? Reality struck Minho once again and suddenly, he wished he wasn’t feeling uncertain about his relationship with Kibum in the future.

*

“Well, that didn’t turn out so bad right?” Kibum asked after they said their goodbyes to his parents and were now walking back to his car that was parked further down the street.

“Are you kidding me, bummie?” Minho let out a tired sigh, feeling like he had just left a battlefield, “Were we not at the same dinner? It’s a wonder how I’m not suffering from indigestion right now.”

“Oh come on, Minho, it could have gone worse.”

“Your parents didn’t say anything but I know they’re against you dating me.”

“Mmhmm.” Kibum simply hummed in reply as he lifted Minho’s arm and placed it around his shoulder before he wrapped his own arm around Minho’s waist and snuggled close to his boyfriend.

“At least one of us is in a good mood.” Minho commented as he looked down at his smiling boyfriend.

“Of course I am… why wouldn’t I be?” Kibum shared his thoughts with Minho, “I’ve finally done what I always wanted to do.”

“Bring me home to your parents?”

“Yeah.”

“Even though your parents hate me?”

“Minho, baby, my parents don’t hate you. Besides, I brought you home not because I wanted to get consent from them…”

Minho stopped walking and frowned at Kibum in confusion.

Kibum smiled and squeezed Minho’s face between his hands, “I brought you home just so my parents knew who I’ve chosen to spend the rest of my life with.”

Minho didn’t know what to say but that didn’t matter anyway because Kibum wasn’t finished with what he wanted Minho to know.

“And my parents know that. That’s why my mum pulled me aside just now and told me that they can’t do anything about my decision because they understand that it’s my life to live. And my father warned me not to come crying back to him if I ever felt like giving up on us or if you did me any wrong… but that’s a risk I’m willing to take.”

At that exact moment, Minho realised he was an idiot for ever losing confidence in their relationship when Kibum had so much faith in him. And then Minho knew. Even if the odds were against them, he and Kibum were going to make it through till the very end because theirs was a love worth fighting for.

Epilogue

“You know I love you right?”

“No, actually, you haven’t told me that before.”

“Kibum…”

“It’s the truth, Choi Minho, and you know it.”

“Alright, fine.” Minho slowly stepped away from Kibum where they stood in the middle of the street that was lined with houses.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Kibum stared at his boyfriend, completely clueless to what Minho had up his sleeve.

Minho simply smiled before he took in a huge breath and shouted at the top of his lungs, “I LOVE YOU, KIM KIBUM, I DON’T KNOW WHEN I DID BUT THAT DOESN’T MATTER BECAUSE I WILL LOVE YOU TILL THE VERY END.”

Kibum could only be thankful that there was no one walking by at that point in time and that no neighbours came out to complain about the noise. Nah, who was he kidding? Kibum was thankful that he had this idiot of a boyfriend who was willing to confess his love for him in public. He knew there was a reason why he had been attracted to Minho from the very beginning, and, in Minho’s words, will love him until the very end.
