Minho has waited long for this moment where he has Kibum right where he wants him, but things don't turn out the way it should.. or maybe it will.
Author's Note: written on request for an angsty and fluffy (at the end) minkey based on the word "lips" and finished overnight because i wanted this posted on a special day~ 키범아생일축하해!! other than that. writing in present tense is tough. oh gosh, i hope i got it right. endings are also difficult. it's awkward, i know, but i hope, all in all, you enjoyed the read!
It all happens in a flash. One second, he's minding his own business, returning back to his room after getting a drink from the kitchen, and the next, Kibum feels his back collide with the wall. It doesn't hurt him as much as it should though because he is more sensitive to something else. The warm, large hands on his shoulders that pin him tightly against the wall bother him more. Let's not forget the minty fresh breath that Kibum feels against his skin because his face is suddenly close to another's. Too close in fact. Their noses threaten to brush against each other every time the body in front of him sways towards him. Kibum knows this face, is familiar with this body too well, so well that he doesn't push his attacker away on instinct. He is more shocked and confused than uncomfortable or threatened, his eyes wide as he stares at the face that fills his entire vision.
“Minho?”
One word from Kibum and time seems to start again. In the next second, Minho cups his face as he tilts his own to a certain angle. It is in that moment that Kibum freezes in his position and his heart skips a beat. It doesn't take much intelligence to figure out what is going to happen next. Kibum finds himself a little afraid but more nervous than he has even been in his life. He sees the same nervousness and anxiety in Minho's eyes as the rapper slowly closes the distance between their faces.
1 millimetre, 2 millimetres, 3 millimetres, Kibum knows their lips will touch any moment now and so his eyes flutter shut. Holding his breath, he expects to feel Minho's lips on his in the next second but that electrifying feeling never comes. The next thing he knows, he feels Minho's hand fall from his face and suddenly, there is a heavy weight on his shoulder. Kibum opens his eyes and all he sees is Minho's brown hair. He looks down as much as he can and realizes that the rapper is resting his forehead against his shoulder. In his line of sight, he also sees how Minho's hands has fallen to his sides and are now balled into fists.
Before Kibum can say anything though, Minho unexpectedly springs up, standing straight to look at Kibum but does not meet his eyes. Kibum knows Minho is staring at his lips and that makes him overly self-conscious. He wants to part them and say something but his lips are dry, seemingly stuck together. It comes natural for Kibum to poke his tongue out so he can wet his lips but Minho isn't giving him any chance to do that either.
“Don't lick them.”
And with that, Minho finally looks into Kibum's eyes but falls silent once again. He stares thoughtfully at Kibum with an unreadable expression on his face the same time Kibum tries to search for answers in his eyes. Of course, he gets none because Minho lets out a sigh and then walks away, leaving Kibum glued against the wall, more clueless than ever.
Upon entering his room, Minho closes the door and locks it before he drags his feet to his bed and falls face first into the mattress. He grabs his pillow and stuffs his face into it to muffle the sounds of his groans and the expletives that follow. Minho doesn't remember a time he has been this angry and pissed with himself. Funny how things can all change in the span of a few minutes...
Earlier in the night, Minho finally made the decision to end his misery and told himself that it was now or never. Yet when he had Kibum right where he wanted him to be, Minho lost the courage to do what he always wanted to do - kiss those damn lips that he had been so unhealthily obsessed with for a time period longer than he would like to admit. What took him so long to make such a seemingly easy decision, you might ask?
Well, Minho likes stability. He rather not take any risks that will change the status quo especially when it has to do with people who means the world to him. Even if it means making his own life difficult for himself, Minho doesn't mind going through the troubles and heartache because he always believes he can deal with everything himself. Recently though, he finds himself feeling threatened and very much unhappy when Kibum returns back to the dorm excitedly telling the members all about his rehearsals for Bonnie and Clyde.
True, Minho feels happy for Kibum, that his chingu has the opportunity to do something else he loves; and the fact that he is making a name in theatre and actually enjoying his time staging a musical makes it all the more better. However, it hits a sore point in Minho when he hears Kibum sharing what he thought was interesting about the intimate, intense kiss scenes with his co-stars especially Dana. Hearing Kibum talk about kissing someone that isn't him is like a slap to Minho's face. It wakes Minho up, everything suddenly becoming clear in an instant, and makes him realize that he can't assume Kibum is going to be his just because he doesn't belong to anyone now. He may not have known what his heart wants before but now, he knows.
This may sound funny but the truth is, Minho falls in love with Kibum's lips before he falls for Kibum himself. It is his lips that attract Minho from the very beginning. It starts when Minho first notices Kibum's lips when he is caught off guard upon hearing the harsh words that escape those very lips. Kibum defines what it means to be straightforward. He only speaks the truth, seldom filtering his thoughts before he speaks, and always voices out his honest opinion. Everyone knows the truth hurts. For this very reason, Minho can’t believe how these hurtful words can come out of such pretty Cupid’s bow lips. And so, more often than not, Minho finds himself fascinated when he studies the movements of Kibum’s lips every time he speaks.
It isn’t soon before long Minho realises he isn’t just staring at Kibum’s lips when he speaks, but he also stares when Kibum keeps quiet. This, he finds out, because of Kibum himself.
“You want some?”
Minho can still hear Kibum’s voice in his head when he was caught looking as the (then) blonde applied lip balm to his lips. He had instantly shook his head only to get ignored because in the next moment, Kibum took a step closer to him and used the very same finger that had been on his lips a second before to moisturise Minho’s dry lips with the remaining coat of lip balm on his finger.
Although Minho can never forget the feel of Kibum’s finger starting at the corner of his bottom lip and carefully working its way to the top, what he remembers the most is the way Kibum’s lips had been pursed in concentration. It is the closest view Minho ever got of Kibum’s alluring lips to date and the image has been stuck in his mind since then. When Minho imagines this to be exactly how Kibum’s lips will look if he is about to kiss him and wonders how those lips will feel against his own, it hits him that this is more than just an obsession.
Minho hates Kibum's lips with a vengeance. It tortures him. It is his biggest distraction. It is his ultimate weakness. To Minho, it is the root of all evil. Minho especially hates it when Kibum’s lips move because it makes him think of things he shouldn’t even be thinking. Not only can Kibum’s lips shape the thoughts in his mind but it also controls how Minho feels. When Minho notices the way his lips turn up or down, it acts like a remote control that adjusts his feelings accordingly too. The power that Kibum’s lips have over him is undeniable and as much as Minho hates how helpless and weak he has become, he allows those lips, and the owner of said lips, to have such a hold over him. Knowing he was in deep, Minho chooses not to do anything about it.
Until moments ago when he corners Kibum in the hallway.
Minho doesn’t regret making the decision to do so, but he does regret chickening out and escaping to his room like a coward. Punching the pillow to vent his frustration, Minho rolls to lie on his back as he then stares at the ceiling and thinks about how he came so close to finally being able to feel those lips he has been staring at since god knows when. And when he starts to wonder about Kibum and what he is thinking right now, Minho knows he isn’t going to get any sleep tonight.
Troubled, Minho stretches his hand and grabs his phone off the bedside table. His mind tells him he should check on Kibum or at least do something to make sure they don’t act differently around each other the next morning but he hesitates, unable to find the courage to face Kibum. He opens up his individual chat with Kibum on KakaoTalk and stares at the keyboard that pops up, as if urging him to type something fast. Just as Minho is deliberating with himself, his phone buzzes in his hand. His eyes widens as he sees the new bubble of text that appears on the screen.
I hope you’re wide awake, Choi Minho.
And apparently, there is more because the text bubbles appear one after another.
Because if I can’t sleep, you can’t either.
I’m just going to keep texting…
And hope it annoys you.
Or if it wakes you up, that’s the best.
So are you awake?
Reply me if you are.
You know why you should.
You owe me an explanation.
Minho takes in a deep breath and finally starts typing.
I’m awake.
Minho pauses for a moment before he decides to send out the next message.
Sorry Kibum.
Minho has to wait a time longer than what it usually takes for Kibum to type a reply before he receives a new message.
What are you sorry for?
For making you lose sleep?
That’s all?
I’m not sorry for doing what I did to you just now.
You aren’t?
I just wish things ended differently.
What if I gave you a chance to show me how things should have ended?
Minho’s mind goes blank, unable to imagine all the possible meanings behind that question.
Minho?
The notification tone brings Minho back to reality and he holds his breath as he waits for Kibum’s next message.
I’m walking out of the kitchen now.
Minho knows what this means. Kibum is giving him a second chance and he’ll be a fool if he doesn’t take it. And so, Minho drops his phone and is out of his bed in an instant. He opens his room door, steps into the dimly lit hallway and instantly spots Kibum looking at his phone as he walks out of the kitchen. Minho holds back a laugh but smiles to himself and quickens his footsteps, knowing that he has already wasted enough time. Taking in a deep breath, Minho lets history repeat itself as he grabs hold of Kibum once again and traps him against the wall.
“Hi.”
Kibum blinks once, twice, thrice before he breaks into a smile and replies, “Hey.”
“We don’t need this anymore…” Minho thinks out loud as he takes Kibum’s phone away and drops it into the side pocket of Kibum’s pajama bottoms, “I’m not going to let this slip away once more.”
The smile on Kibum’s face grows while his hands travel up Minho’s chest and wrap around the back of his neck, gently urging Minho forward as he warns, “You better not.”
That is more than enough to give Minho the confidence to finally close the distance between them and finish what he started. He kisses Kibum once, twice, lightly on his lips before he presses a proper kiss that allows them both to fully feel the other’s lips against their own. With that, Minho moves away with a smile and rests his forehead against Kibum’s. With the heavenly feel of Kibum’s lips lingering on his own, Minho wishes he doesn’t have to stop but his heart is beating too wildly in his chest for him to continue.
So instead, he asks in an almost whisper, “Was that alright?”
“It could be better.” Kibum replies, nodding, as he opens his eyes, fingers caressing the nape of Minho’s neck, “Let’s try that again... something tells me you’re capable of so much more.”
“You don’t even know, Kibum.” Looking at Kibum’s lips, Minho shakes his head and laughs breathlessly as he then looks deep into Kibum’s eyes and repeats, “You don’t even know.”
As Minho closes in once more, Kibum lifts his chin and whispers just before their lips meet, "Show me."
Minho does just that as he proves it with a kiss that keeps Kibum wanting more, a kiss enough for Kibum himself to have his own little obsession over Minho's lips.
