Minho has to do more than just a clumsy confession if he wants Kibum to give him a chance.

Minho is on the way to the kitchen when he passes by Kibum’s room and picks up the sound of his roommate’s phone ringing. He stops at the door and peeks into the room but finds no one inside.
“Kibum?” Minho shouts as he leans back and checks if Kibum is somewhere else in the apartment. From where he is, there is no sign of Kibum in the living room or kitchen as well and Minho starts to wonder if his roommate has left their home without him knowing.
However, he gets an answer in the next moment when Kibum’s voice travels from inside the room.
“In the bathroom!”
Minho decides to step into the room so Kibum can hear him clearly without the need to raise his voice.
“Your phone’s ringing, Bum.” Minho informs while searching the room for his phone.
“Check who it is!” Kibum answers, voice muffled with the bathroom door shut, “If it’s my mum, just answer it and tell her I’ll be there.”
True enough, when Minho grabs Kibum’s phone off the bed, he sees that it is his mother calling and quickly answers the call, doing as instructed.
“Hi Eomonim… Yes, this is Minho... Kibum’s in the bathroom now. Umm, I think so? He says he’ll be there… No problem, Eomonim.” Minho smiles, enjoying the conversation with Kibum’s mother like he would with his own mother, “Thank you for sending over so much food, I really enjoyed it. Ahh yes, alright, have a good night then.”
By the time Minho ends the call, Kibum is out of the bathroom and, if Minho may add, looking absolutely gorgeous in a smart casual attire consisting of a white collared shirt and black fitting pants.
“Going somewhere?” Minho asks, curious as to why Kibum is all dressed up rather conservatively as compared to his usual fashion choices (but still having the ability to turn heads, Minho notes).
Standing in front of his full length mirror, Kibum lets out a breath as he gets busy with styling his hair.
“Yeah,” Kibum replies, meeting Minho’s eyes briefly through the mirror, “Somewhere I don’t really wanna be.”
“Why not?” Minho makes himself comfortable on Kibum’s bed and continues to ask, “Aren’t you meeting your family for dinner?”
After three years of living together, Minho knows Kibum loves his family to death so there’s no reason why he’ll be dreading dinner.
“I am... but it’s more like a matchmaking session tonight.” Kibum explains with another sigh, “Apparently, there’s this lovely girl who my parents think makes the perfect wife and wants to introduce to me.”
It isn’t the first time Minho is hearing about Kibum going on a blind date but his heart still sinks each and every time he realises his roommate who also happens to be the love of his life might meet someone who can steal his heart away.
Minho has been keeping this secret for almost a year. It may not have been love at first sight but Minho knows now that Kibum is the one. They first met in front of a notice board in their university’s student centre. Having both come from outside of Seoul, Minho and Kibum were searching for off-campus apartments to rent. Coincidentally, they found themselves standing side by side, interested in the same apartment, and eventually deciding to share the costs and rent it together.
A lot has happened since they moved in together. From strangers to roommates to friends, Minho and Kibum have naturally come to know each other inside out. In fact, they’ve grown to become as close as family. They don’t say it out loud but Minho knows Kibum cares for him. Still, although this makes Minho happy, it is also his biggest worry. Does Kibum only care for him the way he does for his family? Or is there a possibility for Kibum to care about him the way Minho wants him to?
Truth be told, Minho is terrified. As much as he wants to bravely confess his feelings to Kibum, he fears that what they have now will all be ruined if Kibum doesn’t requite his love. It really isn’t easy to move from being friends to lovers. Some nights, Minho lies in bed regretting the moment he realised he is in love with his roommate. He still remembers the night Kibum came back home, looking like a train wreck and locking himself in the room without saying a word. Minho had never been more worried in his entire life. He didn’t know what to do when Kibum refused to respond to him no matter how much he knocked on his door and coaxed him.
When Kibum finally came out of his room after almost two whole days of isolation with puffy eyes, Minho’s heart broke. He couldn’t move as he stood at Kibum’s door and took in the sight of the dishevelled man in front of him. Kibum had fallen into his arms then and there, asking Minho if love was just a lie. Kibum was silent afterwards, hiding his face against Minho’s chest, but Minho could feel his shirt get wet. He wasn’t bothered about that though as he wrapped his arms tightly around Kibum. Nothing he could say would make Kibum feel better but he hoped his hug would at least show Kibum that he was loved. Minho can’t explain it but it was then he knew he wanted to be the one to prove to Kibum that love isn’t a lie.
It took a couple of days for Kibum to open up and Minho to find out that Kibum’s then boyfriend had cheated on him with a good friend of his. Having been betrayed by two people he treasured, it was Kibum’s worst break up to date. Getting back into the dating scene wasn’t even on his list of priorities in life. So since Kibum kept his guard up and generally had no interest in getting into any relationships, Minho kept his feelings to himself and played the waiting game.
Yet here they are now, Minho still waiting while Kibum gets introduced to potential suitors, or in this case, according to Kibum’s parents, his future wife. Even though Minho knows everyone around Kibum has only good intentions when they set him up on dates, he still feels like killing every single one of them. It’s always Minho who ends up suffering every time Kibum goes out on a date. The wait is torture when Minho is left alone in their house as he watches the minutes go by until Kibum arrives back home. It’s completely nerve wrecking when he sounds Kibum out and tries to find out if he feels anything for his date. So far, Minho can only thank the heavens that the love of his life hasn’t met anyone good enough for a second date but enough is enough. It’s getting too serious when Kibum’s family steps in, coming all the way from Daegu just to introduce a girl to Kibum over dinner in Seoul. It’s as if they want to give Minho a heart attack.
Minho doesn’t want to deal with this anymore. His patience has run out.
“Wife?” Minho can’t help but scoff out loud, “What a joke.”
Kibum turns around and stares at Minho, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Come on, Kibum, we both know where your interests lie.” Minho smirks.
This isn’t the Minho he knows.
Kibum absolutely detests the way Minho is speaking to him and so he narrows his eyes and asks, “What is wrong with you?”
“I’m only speaking the truth…” Minho replies, ignoring the fact that he has let his emotions get the better of him, and continues to say things out of spite, “That poor girl… and your parents… dinner is going to be a disaster. Maybe I should come along and watch the show…”
The second the words leave his mouth, Minho wishes to go back in time and stop himself from talking. He has gone too far. He knows he has made a mistake. Just seeing how Kibum’s face changes makes him regret making a joke out of the situation even more.
“Fck off, Choi Minho.” Kibum curses while pushing Minho off his bed and out of his room, “I don’t know what the hell has gotten into you but my life is not for your entertainment.”
“Bummie, I-” As he catches hold of Kibum’s arms, Minho attempts to make up for his mistake but his roommate instantly cuts him off.
“And not that it concerns you but I’ll have you know that I will enjoy dinner and give the lovely girl a chance.” Kibum declares with a huff before suddenly shaking Minho’s hands off him and turning around to return to his room.
Before Minho can recover from his shock and enter Kibum’s room again, his roommate comes out in the next moment, with his phone and wallet now in his hands, only to storm straight out of the apartment. Of course, Kibum makes sure he gives Minho a glare and even slams the door shut just because he can.
Left alone in the apartment once again like all the other times he watches Kibum leave for a date, Minho feels more horrid than ever. It kills Minho to realise that he himself is responsible for pushing Kibum towards his date tonight. He has only himself to blame for driving Kibum away. What hope does he have of the possibility of Kibum becoming his boyfriend when he may have already ruined his friendship with Kibum?
Feeling frustrated and absolutely miserable, Minho thinks he needs a drink. Staying in the apartment that only reminds him of Kibum will only make him feel even more dejected. And so, he shuffles back into his room, grabs his phone and makes a call to his unofficial best friend since high school.
“Hyung.” Minho says once the call is answered as he searches for his wallet and gets ready to go out, “Care to watch me drown myself in alcohol and suffer the worst hangover of my life?”
“Sounds like fun.” Jonghyun quips (it’s his instinct to joke around with Minho) before turning serious in a split second as he asks concernedly, “Wait, what happened?”
“Kibum.” Minho simply replies, knowing Jonghyun will catch on fast. With his wallet in his pocket, he moves towards the living room and sits down on the sofa.
“He rejected you?”
“I wish.” Minho sighs out loud, staring at the ceiling, “At least that would hurt less than me chasing him into the arms of someone else.”
“Why on earth would you do that?!” Jonghyun exclaims, obviously in disbelief at his friend’s stupidity.
“I don’t know?!” Minho shouts back, growing even more agitated by the second, “What the hell was I supposed to do? Shout at him and tell him, hey Kibum, I’ve been hopelessly in love with you for the past year so could you please take pity and just consider dating me instead?!”
“Yeah, that would work.”
“You’re in love with me?”
Minho freezes. He blinks, confused at what just happened in the past few seconds of his life. Isn’t he only supposed to hear Jonghyun’s voice? Where, then, does the second, ever so familiar, voice come from? Are his ears playing tricks on him?
“Minho? You there?”
“Choi Minho… you… love me?”
Minho hears both voices loud and clear - one through the phone, the other sounding a slight distance away from him in the already small apartment. He knows who it is and that’s the exact reason why he doesn’t even dare move. His heart is beating so fast, his mind blank as he panics and tries to figure out what he should do next. The only thing that comes into his mind is to hang up the phone with Jonghyun. And so, he does.
Minho gulps and then clears his throat as he quickly mutters into the receiver, “Hyung, I’ve to call you back.”
Without waiting for Jonghyun’s reply, Minho ends the call and slowly puts his phone aside, hoping to appear as casual and relaxed as possible. He then puts on a smile and plucks up the courage to turn towards the direction of the voice and meet the eyes of the owner. When he does, he can’t even maintain eye contact for more than a second.
“Kibum…” Minho calls out as he smiles awkwardly, looking everywhere but his roommate, “You’re back… so soon…”
“I forgot to bring the gifts I got for my parents.” Kibum explains, stone-faced.
“Oh… where did you put them?” Minho gets up from the sofa and makes his way towards the rooms, “I’ll go get them-”
“Stop.” Kibum calls out just as Minho walks past him.
Minho does, feeling a little relieved that his back is now facing Kibum.
“Turn around.”
Or maybe not.
With his fists clenched tightly by his sides, Minho curses under his breath, squeezing his eyes momentarily together as he prepares himself for the inevitable.
“Turn. Around. Minho.” Kibum repeats himself, this time with more authority as he enunciates each word clearly.
Once again, Minho does what he’s told; slowly though, as he tries to use whatever time he has to get his brain to function.
“Alright.” Kibum starts once Minho is facing him, “I’m here now so go on, shout at me. Say what you’ve been meaning to tell me.”
“Kibum…” Minho swallows nervously, still unable to make eye contact with his roommate, “I’m sorry, I-”
“Nope.” Kibum shakes his head, “I didn’t hear an apology just now.”
“Why are you doing this?” Minho groans, staring at Kibum’s feet.
“Because I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for you to admit you love me!” Kibum huffs.
At this, Minho finally looks at Kibum and says, “I don’t wanna risk losing you, Kibum.”
“Well, I’m still standing here, aren’t I?”
Silence fills the apartment.
It takes a moment for Minho to digest what Kibum has said but when it does, there is a smile growing on Minho’s face. At this, Kibum rolls his eyes.
“I’m late for dinner.” Kibum mumbles, realising that he has wasted too much time with Minho, and starts walking towards his room to get the gifts he originally came back for.
Minho quickly steps forward and blocks Kibum’s way.
“You’re leaving?” Minho asks with surprise, “After saying that?”
Kibum remains unmoved as he simply raises an eyebrow at Minho, “Why not?”
“Kibum, I…” Minho begins but stops, his heart in his mouth, as Kibum looks at him expectantly.
Taking a deep breath, Minho places his hands on Kibum’s shoulders and looks straight into his roommate’s eyes.
“I just… really, really, like you… you know?” Minho ends off sounding so uncertain that it makes him want to try getting his feelings across once again.
However, when he sees a smile tugging on Kibum’s lips, he loses the ability to speak.
“I thought I heard you say you love me…” Kibum thinks out loud, stopping himself from smiling as he tries to look unimpressed.
Minho finds himself giving up in that moment in time because Kibum is simply too cute.
“Fine, I love you.” Minho finally confesses out loud, his hands slipping down Kibum’s arms to hold his hands, “I really do, Kibum, so please… stop teasing me and give me the chance to take you out on a date?”
Kibum lets out a chuckle, “Now that wasn’t so difficult, was it?”
Minho shakes his head, “Trust me, I’m covered in cold sweat.”
With Kibum grinning at him, Minho ends up smiling along.
“So… Dinner?” Minho asks, still waiting for that yes he so desperately wants to hear from Kibum.
Unexpectedly, Kibum’s eyes widen in shock.
“Dinner!” Kibum gasps and quickly takes his hands out of Minho’s before he rushes to his room.
Caught off guard by the sudden turn of events, it takes a while for Minho to react; so by the time he turns around, he sees Kibum walking out of his room with a paper bag in his hands.
“I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.” Kibum repeats frantically as he checks the contents of the bag while walking towards the main door, “My mother’s going to kill me.”
“Kibum?” Minho tries to get Kibum’s attention as he walks closer towards him.
Upon hearing his name, Kibum looks up with a smile and stops to stand right in front of Minho.
“Wait till I get back alright?” Kibum says before surprising Minho with a kiss on his cheek, “We can plan our first date together then.”
With that, Kibum gives Minho a quick hug and leaves their apartment in a blink of an eye.
Smiling like a fool, Minho is all alone in the apartment for the second time that night but this time, he thinks he can handle it. It’ll definitely be worth the wait. Besides, he could use the time Kibum is away to let reality sink in, which, Minho admits, basically just means he’ll be laughing out loud, jumping around and celebrating the fact that he and Kibum aren’t just roomies anymore.
